EAST END CITIZENS UNITE

COMMITTEE FORMED TO KEEP ORDER. (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, October 18. The Home Secretary (Sir John Simon) has stated his willingness to receive a deputation from the East End of London about public order and the alleged provocative behaviour of Fascist bodies. In the meantime, on the initiative of the Warden of Toynbee Hall, an East End citizens’ committee has been set up, and the presidency has been accepted by the Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr Cosmo Lang), with the object of uniting the churches and social organizations of the district in a united effort to preserve order through insistence on the principles of self-control and tolerance, which is an essential basis of democracy. In this way the promoters of the movement hope to prevent the deterioration of the situation before it becomes serious.
