STRONG WINDS AND RAIN. (Special to The Times.) Wellington, October 19. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland:— Strong north-westerly winds to gales, backing at times to westerlies. Weather unsettled and rain probable. Temperatures mild. Seas rough to high. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather cloudy to overcast, with further scattered rain in the Auckland province and unsettled and squally conditions and rain developing soon in all western areas and in the far south, with some heavy falls in Westland. Mainly fair in eastern districts, but later scattered rains probable there also. Temperatures mild. General situation.—A shallow depression is located north of the North Island and a series of intense westerly depressions is advancing across the south Tasman Sea. Winds—North-easterly at first in the far north, otherwise northerly to north-westerly prevailing, moderate to strong generally and of gale force at many places south of New Plymouth and Castlepoint. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough north of East Cape and becoming rough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, elsewhere slight to moderate, but later rising offshore south of Castlepoint; eastern Tasman Sea, moderate easterly winds changing to freshening northerlies in the far northern portion, with moderate, but rising seas, elsewhere strong northerly to north-westerly winds to gales and rough seas. The weather was fine in Invercargill yesterday, but a strong northerly wind blew throughout the day. The wind 'dropped in the early evening, but came up again after 10 o’clock. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was fine, but there was a strong wind from the north.
