Fifty Years Ago To-day

(From The Southland Times.) OCTOBER 20, 1886. More Gold.—Mr S. H. Moreton writes: “It is always pleasant to hear that some profit by experience. I was stopped by a gentleman and addressed as follows: ‘You remember some time since mentioning to me your having taken some good prospects from the Bullock Paddock at Manapouri.’ > I answered in the affirmative. ‘Well, I mentioned the conversation to a son of mine who had to go over the spot to execute some business. The result was that he, with only an old shovel, managed to obtain some really good prospects. He goes back to complete his former work and, when finished, more will be heard of the Bullock Paddock.” Breach of the Fisheries Act—A large seal was killed at Ocean Beach, Dunedin, last Saturday by Mr R. Paulin. The seal, which was sft 7in in length and was doubtless the one that was recently taken by three misguided youths for a human being intent on suicide, had emerged from the water and gone some distance up the beach when first seen bv Mr Paulin. The latter had no offensive or defensive weapons at hand—nothing but an innocent watering-pot in which he was about to get some sea-water. Nevertheless he dashed between the seal and its native element, with intent to cut off its retreat and secure its valuable skin. The mammal made straight for the intruder and showed fight in a most det.rmined manner, but Mr Paulin stood firm as a rock and, watching his opportunity, brought the watering pot down on his quarry’s head with such crushing force as to kill it outright and ruin for ever—as an agricultural implement —the instrument of death. Wyndham Dairy . Factory.—The factory is now under weigh, over 600 gallons of milk coming in daily. The necessary alterations for receiving up to 2500 gallons are all but completed.
