ENGLAND FOUR FOR 469

First Innings Of Tour

HAMMOND’S IMPRESSIVE BATTING

ATTRACTIVE DISPLAY BY HARDSTAFF

(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Perth, October 18. In the first innings of their opening match of the tour, against Western Australia, the English cricketers have lost four wickets for 469.

R. E. S. Wyatt and W. R. Hammond to-day completed a second-wicket partnership of 221 runs. Hammond gave an impressive exhibition, scoring 141 runs in 180 minutes. After he passed his century he discarded safe methods and hit two sixes, the first into the members’ reserve, where the ball broke a window of the players’ dressingroom.

Hammond threw his innings away, but was satisfied that he had had sufficient practice. He gave chances when at 81 and 129. His timing throughout was superb, his driving on the off being particularly fine.

Wyatt, in contrast, was extremely dull, his painstaking _ innings of _ 106 runs occupying 282 minutes. He aimed to secure useful practice and did not accept all opportunities to score, except an occasional crisp off-drive or hefty pull. After the tea adjournment J. Hardstaff and L. B. Fishlock, the lefthander, were making their Australian debut as partners. Both had early escapes. Fishlock’s strong shots included a six. Hardstaff, after early uncertainty, especially against the fast bowler Halcombe, settled down to play attractively, his driving through the covers being admired. Several times he lifted the ball to the open spaces beyond the bowler. T. S. Worthington, who has adopted some of Hammond’s methods, showed satisfactory form. Despite Wyatt’s slowness the team maintained a fast rate of scoring, and five sixes were hit. Halcombe was an unlucky bowler, having several chances missed in the slips. The weather was sunny and the wicket was in splendid order. Scores:— WESTERN AUSTRALIA. First Innings 142 ENGLAND. First Innings. R. E. S. Wyatt c Lovelock b Halcombe 106 C. J.
