NEXT ATTEMPT ON EVEREST

“BEST CLIMBER SHOULD BE LEADER” VIEWS OF ALPINE CLUB (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) London. October 17. There is a growing feeling among members of the Alpine Club that the control of Mount Everest expeditions should be in the hands of climbers only, not as before of a mixed committee of the Alpine Club and the Royal Geographical Society. It is urged that the leader of the next expedition should be the climber whose chances of gaining the summit are most fancied.

Captain G. I. Finch, the former Everest climber, said: “It is a question of national importance. We are beginning to make ourselves ridiculous. Germans and Americans want to attempt Everest, and unless we put up a better show it will be difficult to argue that we are justified in keeping Everest to ourselves. “We should choose the best possible climber as leader, with an age limit of between 25 and 35. Forceful personality and strong character are needed. The pertinacious spirit of a Jean Batten is what is going to get men to the top.”
