A final reminder is given that acceptances for the first day of the Gore spring meeting close to-day at. 5 p.m. ; The northern lightweight horseman ' E. A. Leckic has joined up with Mr W. E. Hazlett's stable. I

Mr G. J. Barton has purchased the five-year-old trotter Bittersweet from Durbar Lodge.

Last Pal, by Last Dart-Paladin mare ran half a mile on Saturday in 58 2-5 sec. R. Bromby’s pupil knows how to gallop.

The Dominion-bred Prince Pombal, who has won a lot of races round Sydney under weights, is now being schooled for hurdling.

Baitruin and British Star were sent five furlongs on Saturday and could have improved on the lmin llsec it took them to run the distance.

A Hawke’s Bay writer says that perhaps the best middle-distance hack at present in commission in Hawke’s Bay is the four-year-old Charade, who looks very fit.

The trial grass track at Invercargill was open for fast work on Saturday and was extensively used. It provided holding going, but conditions otherwise were good.

Western Song and Enwood were matched over six furlongs on Saturday and recorded lmin 24 2-ssec—a useful effort. They ran the last four in 58 2-ssec. Both look well.

Amelita had Silver Choir for a mate over five furlongs on Saturday and in recording lmin 9sec they were responsible for a useful effort. The former is coming to hand in approved style.

Double Shot was doing better than Ocean Singer at the end of seven furlongs on Saturday. The time was Imin 38sec—a useful gallop on the part of both horses.

Jack Ahoy, All Humbug and Moneyless registered Imin 9sec for five furlongs on Saturday and the first named, who is more forward than his companions, took the honours.

Venite and Galleon were too good for Mona Song over five furlongs on Saturday, but the maiden performer was not disgraced. Venite may be given a spell in the near future.

The pacers Sunny Morn, Gunmetal and Homeward have been sold to go to Perth. Under the system of “letting up” imported horses in the handicaps, Sunny Morn should do well in the West.

Despite her failures in Australia Cuddle will probably be started on a distance preparation when she arrives home this week. T. R. George is confident he can fit the mare up again.

G. Price does not agree with the idea that Gold Rod may never race again. He says that the trouble is not so serious as it might have been, and he is hopeful that a spell may effect a cure.

The Pink Coat—All Smiles gelding in A. E. Didham’s stable has grown into a big three-year-old. So far he has not been asked for any serious efforts, but is well forward in condition to commence fast work.

Red Treasure and Johnny were companions over six furlongs on Saturday and ran the distance in Imin 25 l-ssec without being asked to do their best. Johnny is looking well at present while Red Treasure showed a good deal of dash.

Queen Astrid and the British Em-pire-Queen Balboa mare in F. W. Ellis’s stable were allowed to run along for half a mile. The latter was very lame behind after the gallop and made the fourth member of this trainer’s team to go wrong this season.

The two-year-old filly by Gustavo from Universal (Arrowsmith —Differential) has been named Gustrina, and has been broken in by W. E. Hancock at Wingatui. She is a nicely shaped filly, low set, and of a very quiet temperament.

Nothing is working better at Epsom than Princess Onyx, and the ex-south-ern mare should not be long in getting on the winning list in Auckland. She has only recently been converted into a pacer, but is handling the straps in great style.

Dr J. E. Rogers continues to be disappointed in his endeavours to secure a colt foal from one of his brood mares. Last week Soldier’s Fancy produced a filly foal to Philamor. Soldier’s Fancy is the dam of the well-known Red Raoer and is by Soldier’s Chorus from Redstart, by Casket—Red Riding Hood, by Le Loup—Lass O’ the Hills.

At the annual meeting of the Clifaen Racing Club held at Orawia a deputation from the Riverton Centenary Committee waited on the club with a view of having the race meeting held at Riverton during centenary week. After a good deal of discussion the club decided to hold its race meeting at Clifden.

The horse responsible for the return of R. B. Berry to the ranks of trainers associated with gallopers is Vola Dale, a five-year-old mare by Paladin from Ferino. Vola Dale is owned by Mr W. T. Lowe, one of the best known trotting men in Canterbury. Berry rode Sinapis when that mare captured the New Zealand Cup after being allowed to pass through a strikers’ barricade.

The Racing Conference intends to enforce the rule providing that horses must be registered before accepting for any race, and the Masterton Club was notified that the Kileset filly was ineligible to race there last week. In England horses are allowed even to race without a name being registered.

At the charity meeting at Addington on Thursday Indianapolis was privately timed to pace lj miles in 3.10 2-5 from "post to post,” and this has been described as the fast time over the distance at Addington. Harold Logan has a record for two miles there of 4.12 2-5 from a standing start, equivalent to about 4.10 from post to post. He averaged 2.5 to the mile, and 3.71 for a mile and a half, over the two mile trip.

Never before in the history of trotting in New Zealand have there been so many really great pacers in commission at one time, and this is shown in the nomination for the Free-for-All, the final event of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting. The Free-for-All should provide one of the greatest races within memory, and the meeting of Indianapolis, Harold Logan, Roi I’Or, Graham Direct (who has yet to win over a mile and a-quarter), Gamble, De Soto, and others will create the greatest interest.

The following are the nominations for the Auckland Cup, £1750 (two miles) — Pladie, Mazir, Sunee, Caliente, _ Con Fuoco, Dark Shadow, Master Brierly, Horowhenua, Sinking Fund, Cuddle, Might, Korero, Kelly, King Tut, Gay Rose, Oratory, Entheos, King Rey, Fersen, Knight of Australia, Shy, Red Manfred. Argentic, Dungarvan, Ponty. Spiral, Entail, Silver Ring, Scotland. Gay Talkie, Sporting Blood, Teddy Boy, Custos, Hunting Cat, Enge, Jonathan, Gallio, Flood Tide, Werohia, Mungatoon. King Musk, Vintage, Willie Win, Valrent, Inheritance, Aussie Ra, Grateful.

In discussing Melbourne Cup prospects, a Melbourne writer says that Silver Ring is the horse that should logically return to favouritism, a position he occupied earlier. In the autumn the New Zealander was the outstanding distance weight-for-age performer, and it does not appear that he will have any serious rivals in that sphere during this visit. In all his Australian races Silver Ring has been ridden by A. E. Ellis, with just sufficient in hand to win. He may have been ridden right out, but it has appeared that Ellis has always had a bit extra in reserve should he have been hard pressed. Silver Ring is thoroughly seasoned, and will run out the two miles to the end. He has a lot of weight, but whatever chance Sylvandale has, this fellow has a few pounds to the better of it on performances, in addition to weight advantage.

' There were several great performj ! anccs at the charity r. eeting at Ad- „ i dington on Thursday, says the ChristI church Press, and the Licensed Victual- : lers’ Handicap resulted in one of the ; most exciting finishes ever seen on the ' course, eight horses passing the ■ post j almost in line. Raydus, alter being 3 well placed throughout, pushed his nose in front as the post was reached, just defeating Graham Direct, who made a , break halfway through the racing, los--1 | ing a big stretch of ground. He put up .I a sensational last half-mile, and the 5 manner in which he carried on his run I on the outside of the field stamped him ! as a very possible winner of the New ! Zealand Cup. The winner went 3min . 16sec for the mile and a-half, and t Graham Direct’s time was 3min 14 ; l-ssec. Private watches timed him to do 3min 12sec from post to post. But I for one mistake during the running he . j would have won comfortably. InI dianapolis ran the fastest mile and I a-half registered at Addington when | he was timed to do 3min 10 2-ssec from I post to post, although he was not persevered with over the last furlong. ' Both Graham Direct and Indianapolis I are in great order, and the former, by | I his excellent display, will now dispute | favouritism with Mr G. J. Barton’s ! crack pacer. Grand Mogul, starting off I the same mark as Graham Direct, was I fairly outclassed by F. G. Holmes’s I pacer, who conceded him a big start I over the last half-mile, and beat him ! decisively. Grand Mogul, however, ’ went a very solid race, and is coming along in his cup preparation. Red

Shadow 'started smartly, but the race had not been long in progress before he was passed by Indianapolis, and on appearances the chestnut is a back I number. i

I WAIRIO JOCKEY CLUB ANNUAL REPORT. | The following is the annual report of the Wairio Jockey Club to be presented at the annual meeting on October 24:— The stakes for the annual race meeting were increased to £BOO, and after paying taxes amounting to £597 8/10, a profit of £96 3/1 was made on the fixture. Fine weather was again experienced for the meeting, and though the fields were not quite so good as at the jubilee fixture the previous year, excellent racing was provided. The totalisator investments amounted to £6696 10/- as against £7017 10/- the previous year, and £5126 10/- in 1934. The committee found it necessary to carry out a number of repairs to the buildings during the past year. These cost £147 3/4, and provided muchneeded improved stand accommodation for the club’s members. Legal charges for the new fifty year’s lease amounted to £l4 17/6, and to meet these charges it was necessary to draw £IOO from the club’s reserve fund in the Invercargill Savings Bank. The season began with an overdraft of £45 8/6 and closed with an overdraft of £72 13/9. The club’s cash reserves have been reduced from £587 8/9 to £sllll/3, thus a loss on the year’s working of £IOO 2/9 has to be recorded. The finances, however, are still in a very sound position, and after providing £SO for depreciation on the buildings and plant, the assets are £IO3O 17/3 in excess of the liabilities. The membership is not as large as it should be in such a good district. Last year there were 137 on the roll, but the number has dropped this season to 118. A challenge trophy has been presented to the club, and vzill be held by the member of the committee enrolling the largest number of members each season. The prospects for the ensuing season are promising. There are plenty of horses about, and all meetings show increased totalisator returns. The committee will look to the members making a recommendation at the annual meeting about the amount of stakes to be given next January. During the past year a trotting club was formed in the district, and to assist the inaugural meeting to be held in December, the committee has granted the new dub the use of its course and appointments free of charge. THE CAULFIELD CUP

North Wind’s Surprise Victory A BRILLIANT FINISH RECORD ATTENDANCE (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Melbourne, October 17. There was an enormous attendance for the second day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting. The official figures were 63,225, which is a record. The weather was fine and bright. The despised outsider North Wind finished brilliantly to win the Caulfield Cup. He was purchased a few weeks ago for 500 guineas by Colonel Cohen with a view to to-day’s race. North Wind gave a poor display in the Herbert Power Handicap on the first day of the meeting, running last, and I his chance was discounted. He is trained by Cecil Godby, who won the Cup previously with Gaine Carrington and Purser.

Silver Standard ran a great race and was beaten in the last few strides.

Talking put up a good effort and made most of the pace. Gay Blonde finished strongly in fourth place. Desert Chief and Gay Circle ran satisfactory races but Golden Promise never looked dangerous. Onewhetu was always near the near. N. Percival, the rider of Onewhetu, states his horse finished well and may have gained a place if able to begin faster. Another rank outsider, Arbalest, outstayed the hot favourite Siren to win the Burwood Handicap. It was his first success.

Mr W. R. Kemball’s Bazaar finished brilliantly, but just failed in the Mona Nursery. Ena showed improved stamina compared with last week. Barametric finished brilliantly on the rails in the Gwyn Nursery and beat the pacemakers. Night Guard and Sir Grey. The New Zealander Silver Bond, having his first outing, made the pace early and gave a promising effort. Royal Quex was never dangerous. Seymour had a runaway victory in the Wyuna Steeplechase. His rider, A. Fullarton, won last year on Wirrate. Cynical Kid made up ground to run a poor fourth. Ogweir, winner of the Windsor Handicap, completed a double for his rider, H. Badger. Gay Pop had every show. Press Gang finished in a brilliant manner. Radiant Star never looked danger- j ous.

Silver Ring has slight soreness, but it is not regarded as being serious. Results
