WEATHER UNSETTLED. MISTY RAIN IN PLACES. (Special to The Times.) Wellington, September 21. Following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: —

Light to fresh southerly to southeasterly winds. Weather cloudy on the coast, with misty rain in places, but otherwise fair. Temperatures cool. Seas moderate to rather rough. Following is the Dominion forecast: — Weather cloudy to overcast in most districts, with scattered showers or misty rain at times, but later some heavy falls probable in the northern half of the North Island. Temperatures mild at first in the North Island, but cool in the South Island and becoming cooler generally during to-morrow. Weather improving shortly in western and southern

districts. General Situation.—A shallow depression is crossing the Dominion to-day and another one appears to be located over the north-west Tasman Sea. An anti-cyclone covers south-eastern Australia and extends on to the southern Tasman Sea.

Winds.—Northerly to north-easterly mainly, but southerlies prevailing in the southern portion of the South Island and extending over most of the Dominion within the next 24 hours, force light to moderate, but freshening somewhat.

Seas.—New Zealand waters, rather rough to rough north of Farewell Spit and in the Cook Strait area, moderate to rather rough south of Farewell Spit, elsewhere slight to moderate, but later rising north of East Cape; eastern Tasman Sea, northerly winds at first in the northern and central portions, southerly in the southern and southerlies or south-easterlies later becoming general, force moderate, with moderate seas, but wind and sea rising shortly.

A short spell of dry weather, was broken yesterday, rain falling at intervals during the day. A light easterly wind was blowing. Last evening steady rain fell.

At one o’clock this morning the weather was fine, though there was a slight wind from the south-east. The barometer readings for Saturday, Monday and Tuesday have been as follows:—

This morning (falling) 29.89 in. Yesterday 29.67 in. Saturday 29.62 in.
