Riverton PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

SUCCESSFUL SALE OF WORK The sale of work organized by the wbmen members of the Presbyterian Church attracted a large attendance. The proceeds are to be devoted to the mission funds of the church. The Rev. A. Macfarlane opened the sale of work. Following are the stall-holders: Sewing and fancy work, Mesdames A. Evans, E. B. Patrick and Miss Allan; produce, Mesdames J. Crawford and A. Provan; sweets, Mesdames A. Helm and Gag; cakes, Mesdames A. Calder and D. C. Robertson; dips, Mesdames R. Harrington and Whittingham; Busy Bees, Misses Cassels, Tweedie and young helpers; flowers, Mesdames T. Borland, W. Gunnion and Misses Meek (The Rocks). RETURNED SOLDIERS A special meeting of the Riverton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, held in the band room, was well attended. Mr J. A. Martin presided. Mr R. Dickson said that the question of using the Aparima Bowling Club’s pavilion as a club room had been fully discussed between representatives of the two organizations. A proposal had been made by the Aparima Club that members of the association should pay, say, 15/- as first year players. When finances warranted, it was proposed to enlarge the pavilion at an estimated cost of £l5O. It was decided to amalgamate with the bowling club. The sum of £l5 was voted to the new club, which will be known as the Aparima Returned Soldiers’ Bowling Club. Messrs Dickson, Robertson and Stout were appointed a sub-committee, with power to act, to confer with the Aparima Bowling Club. Mr H. C. Johnstone moved that a letter of appreciation be forwarded to the Aparima Bowling Club thanking it for accepting the offer of amalgamation. Mr E. Stout seconded the motion, which was carried. HOSPITAL RADIO SET At a meeting of the Wallace Hospital Board, Dr E. S. Fossey, the medical superintendent, stated that £27 had been collected towards the cost of installing a radio set at the hospital. Members expressed approval of the scheme, and they decided to make individual contributions towards a set. THE ATHENAEUM At the monthly meeting of the Athenaeum Committee, Mr J. A. C. Mackenzie presided over a good attendance. A short discussion about the heavy costs of repairing the building took place. One member remarked that it looked as if the committee would have to consider erecting a new building before long. It was decided to procure a report from an architect. ROWING CLUB Last season the Riverton Rowing Club had 26 financial members, and judging by the enthusiasm being shown, this number will be considerably augmented as the year advances. Last year a convertible pair was purchased from Edwards and Son, of Melbourne, and with the addition of this boat, the club is now in a good position. At the beginning of the season the sheds were painted and thoroughly renovated, and when the practice boats receive an overhaul, everything will be in first class order. Financially the club is in a good position as there is a credit balance of £7O 17/1. It has been decided to open the season on September 30.
