Balfour CONCERT IN HALL

INVERCARGILL PARTY A concert programme was given in the hall by Invercargill artists. The programme was as follows: Community singing, leader, Mr Kingston; solo, Miss Hunter; violin solo, Miss Mc_ Indoe; solo, Mr Mathieson; solo, Miss Walker; pianoforte duet, Mrs Kingston and Mr Thomas; solo, Mr Kingston; solo, Miss Mclndoe. Mrs W. H. Ward and Mr G. Hamilton delivered addresses. CLAY BIRD SHOOT A successful clay bird shoot was held by the Balfour Gun Club. Results:— ' Six Bird Handicap.—N. O’Callaghan (16yds) 1. Twelve Bird Handicap.—Dr Bell (12yds) 10 birds, 1. Nine Bird Sweepstake.—M. Reidy and W. Roy (13yds) 1 eq., M. West (12yds) 2. Six Bird Handicap, walk-up from 18yds.—W. Roy 1, Dr Bell 2. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH A bazaar under the auspices of the Ladies’ Guild was held in the hall. The winners of the various competitions were: Sheep guessing, Messrs A. Rassmussen and G. McCaldon eq.; women’s stepping competiton, Mrs A. McLean; nail driving, Mrs D. Alexander; cake, Mesdames Todd and Ginnivan; doll, Miss G. Cowie. A concert programme was given as follows:—Pianoforte duet, Misses M. Baird and J. George; solo, Mr Tait; solo, Mrs Brash, Lumsden; recitation, Mrs R. J. Stewart; solo, Mr R. Evans, Invercargill; cornet solo, Masters Voight and Helier, Gore; solo, Mr F. Robinson; Maori duet, Misses McKinna, Lumsden; solo, Miss Collett, Oamaru; character sketch, Mr C. Clayton; solo, Miss Collett; trio, Miss Collett and Messrs R. Evans and Tait.

TENNIS OPENING The Balfour Tennis Club held its opening. Visitors were present from Waikaia and Wendonside. In the absence of the president (Mr R. T. Wilson) Mr A. Liddell, the vice-president, declared the season open. The president’s wife, Mrs R. T. Wilson, and the club captain, Miss R. Wilson, hit a ball over the net.
