The Social Round

Mrs W. Rea, Pomona Road, has returned from a holiday in Dunedin. Miss Noeline Baker, Stewart Island, is at present the guest of Mrs C. J. Brodrick, Wellesley. Mr and Mrs H. G. Sutton, Swinton street, returned last evening from a short visit to Dunedin. Miss Mona Mitchell travelled to Christchurch by the express last evening. She will go on to Wellington by the steamer express this evening. Mr and Mrs F. W. Gresham and their daughter, Mrs A. G. Gillies, of Christchurch, are at present the guests of Mrs Gresham’s sister, Mrs J. N. Armour, Avenal. Miss Elinor Jones, Eamslaw street, Miss Elizabeth Macdonald, Avenal, Mr R. T. Stewart, Otautau, and Mr A. McPhail, Riverton, were the guests of Mrs E. A. Nichol, Morningside, Bluff, for the week-end.
At a cabaret held in Elmwood Garden on Saturday evening, those present were: Mr and Mrs I. D. McKenzie, Mr and Mrs Slocombe; Mrs Watson; Misses L. Reane, M. Lange, A. Sloan, M. Robertson, A. Roberts, R. Gough, A. Hunter, R. Courtis, O. Mac Gibbon, E. Lindsay, R. Ward and M. Godward; Messrs G. C. Dunn, C. Lange, Brun, B. Gardiner, A. L. Mac Gibbon, A. J. Dunn, M. G. Sloan, J. B. Courtis, F. Stapp, J. Mac Gibbon and Cooper.
There was a big attendance at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Mataura, when a complimentary social was tendered Mr and Mrs Robert McCaughan, sen., who have recently disposed of their property and have retired to live in the town. A pleasant evening was spent in dancing. Mi- J. A. Walker, who presided, conveyed to the guests best wishes in their retirement and expressed regret that after so long a residence in Block VII they were moving. They had proved themselves estimable friends and neighbours, he_ said, and had taken a prominent part in all social activities in that locality. He asked their acceptance of an eiderdown quilt and travelling rug. Further remarks were made by the Mayor, Mr John Buchanan, Messrs J. J. McErlean, J. Wilson and D. Barkley. Mr McCaughan suitably replied. Items were given by several present, and Mr and Mrs T. Ryan provided music for the dancing.
