RESTAURANT PRICES
No General Rise
Exception to certain statements (termed misleading) in a report published in The Southland Times yesterday on the subject of a rise in the cost of meals in the city restaurants has been taken by the proprietress of The Brown Owl Cafe. . It was incorrect, she emphasized, to state that a flat rate of one shilling was charged for afternoon teas. . You can get either afternoon or morning tea at the Brown Owl for ninepence,” she said, “and even morning tea and biscuits or bread-and-butter for sixpence. The two-course meal has been cut out and while it is true that the minimum price for suppei - is now one shilling all the former charges for other meals remained the same as far as our business is concerned.” Service had always been the keynote of the Brown Owl, the management of which had long endeavoured to give the Invercargill public somewhere cosy to have their suppers, she said. Expenses had increased so greatly recently that to maintain that service at night it had been found absolutely imperative to make the minimum charge for supper one shilling. And even at that figure there was no profit whatever.
