Winton TENNIS CLUB

DISCUSSION ON NEW PAVILION

The 24th annual meeting of the Winton Tennis Club was presided over by the president (Mr L. G. de la Perrelle). There was an attendance of 18. The chairman referred to the deaths during the year of the club’s patron, Mr P. A. de la Perrelle, and Mr John Dobbie, an active member. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. In referring to the past year the chairman said that a most successful season had been experienced. The membership had increased and the balance-sheet showed an improved position. Last year there was a balance of £2O and this year a credit of £29. The club’s teams had done quite well, the senior team winning the premiership of the Invercargill B competition. Office-bearers were elected as follows: Patron, Mr T. Walker; president, Mr L. G. de la Perrelle; vice-presidents, Messrs T. Walker and O. A. B. Smith; general committee, Mrs J. Swale, Misses E. Sutherland, B. Mitchell, M. Tilley and Messrs J. Raymond, F. Tilley, G. Lindsay and R. Goodall; selection committee, Mrs T. W. Brandford and Messrs J. Raymond and O. Smith; social committee, women members of general committee, with power to add; auditor, Mr J. A. Broom; delegates to Southland Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs L. de la Perrelle and O. Smith; delegates to Central District Association, Messrs J. de la'Perrelle, F. Tilley and R. Goodall. Opening day was fixed for Wednesday, September 30, subject to the courts being in order. An alternative opening was arranged for the following Wednesday, October 7. It was decided that it be recommended to the committee that teams be entered in the Invercargill and Central competitions. The chairman stated that the club could obtain the money for a new pavilion from the Sports Trust fund at a low rate of interest. A copy of the plans of the Otautau Club pavilion had been received for perusal. The chairman stated that the courts were situated on a borough reserve. The club could not give a security by way of mortgage, and the only way to secure a loan was by joint and several guarantees. A recommendation was earned to the committee that £25 of the present balance be set aside and used for permanent improvements. It was also suggested to the committee that necessary repairs be undertaken, that the fence on the east side be renewed and that the courts be topdressed. Three new members were proposed.
