WALLACE COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING VISIBILITY AT HIRST’S CROSSING The monthly meeting of the Wallace County Council yesterday was attended by Messrs G. F. E. Stroud (chairman), W. T. James, B. C. Horrell, J. H. Smith, H. F. Blatch, W. B. Hopcroft, F. J. Linscott and D. Teviotdale. The member for the riding and the county engineer were delegated to attend to the request of Mr S. G. Burtenshaw, secretary of the Colac Bay Hall Committee, that the approaches to the hall be put in a proper state of repair. Mr J. Dow, District Engineer of the Railways Department, wrote stating that the complaint about the visibility at Hirst’s crossing had been investigated, and arrangements had been made to have the mounds of ditch cleanings on the top of the cuttings levelled off, He stated that this crossing was on the list for elimination in order of urgency, the matter being now in the hands of the Main Highway Board. As it would be some time before anything was done at this crossing he suggested that should the council desire to improve the view in the meantime, arrangements could be made for the council to carry out the excavation up the cuttings obscuring the view.
Mr D. S. McLaren, Eastern Bush, asked that urgent consideration be given to the repairing of the Eastern Bush-Blackmount road which was in a bad state. The member for the riding and the county engineer were delegated to inspect the road with a view to repairs being carried out. The county clerk reported that owing to the fact that the valuation rolls could not be prepared in time, nothing could be done this year about any alteration to the boundaries of Orepuki and Waiau ridings. Cr Hopcroft moved that the follow*ing amounts be voted for expenditure in Pourakino riding: Armstrong and Peterson’s road, maintenance gravelling, £3O; Ermedale—Gummies Bush road, maintenance gravelling, £5O; total, £BO. The following tenders were accepted:—
Maintenance gravelling, Ermedale— Gummies Bush road: Mr F. Brunton, 3/11 a yard. Gravelling Johnstone road, Drummond: J. Bye and Son, 3/5 a yard. Maintenance gravelling, Pourakino road: Mr I.
