GIRL GUIDES

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK. Is it so small a thing To have enjoyed the sun, To have lived light in the spring, To have loved, to have thought, to have done; To have advanced true friends, and beat down baffling foes? Used Stamps.' I have a letter from Green Gables, Pukerau, offering us used stamps. Thank you very much. We should be very glad to have them indeed. Would you please send them to the Provincial secretary, Miss G. Basstian, Tweed street, Invercargill. Acknowledgment of Donation. I have received the following letter from the secretary of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind. Perhaps the company responsible will see it:— “Dear Madam,—Please accept our hearty thanks for the donation of a box of beads which you have forwarded to us. They are very useful and we will make good use of them.” Another Letter from Miss Kirk.

“Dear Guides, —I loved Wales, and had great fun in trying to talk in their language. We saw some English Guides in camp on a hill beside Lake Windermere. We called to see them and they were very thrilled, and wanted to hear all about you. They had a wonderful camp site and had been rowing on the lake—a very tidy camp, too! Next day we met them at Grasmere. They had been for an all day hike and had been caught in a thunderstorm, but were very happy. We have been travelling all the time and have been through the Scottish loch country. We have only had our hood up about three times and then only for a short time. The bluebells and heather are doing their best for us—the hillsides are ablaze. We have seen lots of quail and pheasants and water-hens. These latter have such a very long bill and have a weird call. We have also seen our first squirrel. We love this rambling and cooking our meals on the wayside just as though we were camping. We shall be in London for the winter and will then have more time to give you more details.”

Provincial Affairs. All districts are asked to hand in their annual reports not later than the end of September. Waikaia, Gore and home reports have been received. It has been decided to give up the Guide rooms and use the rooms of St. John’s Rangers. Secretaries are asked to see that all equipment accounts are paid by the end of the month.
