Wyndham THE METHODIST CHURCH

SPECIAL SERVICE FOR ANNIVERSARY

The Wyndham Methodist Church celebrated its 23rd anniversary by special services, at which the Rev. C. Ashworth officiated in the morning and the Rev. Mr Kent, of Gore, in the evening. A social gathering was held at the church, Mr Ashworth presiding. On such an occasion, he said, it was fitting to remember the old members of the church. The most recent was the late Mr Andrew A. Wilson, who had been present at the last anniversary and who had been a faithful member of the Church Trust. Then .there was the late Mr E. G. Macpherson. He also mentioned a late minister of the circuit, the late Rev. G. H. Bridgeman, who, after 10 years’ absence was still remembered.

The Rev. E. B. Chambers, of Invercargill, also spoke. A birthday cake, baked by Mrs Humphries, and iced by Miss Myrtle Boddy, was cut by Mrs O. Petterssen, who also lit 23 candles. These were blown out by Master Leslie Boddy, whose birthday fell on the day. The following programme was presented:—Vocal solos, the Rev. E. B. Chambers; vocal trio, Mr F. Smith and Mesdames Duncan and Boddy; recitations, Valmy Warren; harp solos and negro spirituals, Mr W. J. Lennon; vocal solo, Mrs Duncan; recitations, Miss E. Patterson; vocal duet, Flora and Gertie Ellis; vocal duet, Thelma and Nancy Duncan; mouth organ solos, Master lan Thompson; vocal solo, Mr F. Smith; harp solos, Mr Lennon; vocal duet, Mesdames Duncan and Boddy. The accompanists were Mr W. J. Lennon, Mrs J. Duncan and Miss N. Duncan.

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

An address on mission work in India, illustrated by lantern slides, was delivered to members of the Wyndham branches of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union and Girls’ Auxiliary in the Sunday School Hall, by Miss Mathews, the Girls’ Auxiliary missionary in that country. There was a good attendance. The Rev. G. D. Falconer presided. Miss L. Simpson also spoke.

MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB

Eighteen members competed at the weekly, shoot of the Wyndham Miniature Rifle Club. All competitors belonged to the A. grade section. The automatic system of handicapping was adopted and some very good targets were returned. D. Horne won the competition with a net score of 78, closely followed by L. Ford, whose net score was 77.

A sweepstake, own handicap, was won by W. Frame, W. Smith being second.

ANGLICAN CHURCH The ceremony of confirmation was performed by the Bishop (the Rt. Rev. W. A. F. Fitchett) in St. Mary’s Anglican Church. Eight candidates were presented, four being from Wyndham and four from Mataura. Those from Wyndham were Mrs T. Burstall, Misses Joan and Maude Genge and Mr Harold Genge. The Mataura candidates were Mrs Marriner, Miss Isobel Knowles and Messrs Arthur Cockbum and J. Poskitt. Bishop Fitchett delivered a sermon on the folly of divorcing religion from everyday life. Miss L. Marsh played the organ.
