RUGBY FOOTBALL SOUTHLAND TEAM. MATCH AGAINST WELLINGTON. The Southland Rugby selectors (Messrs H. S. Strang, J. L. Oughton and A. H. ONE CHANGE IN OTAGO TEAM FOR RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH.

One change has been made in the Otago team to defend the Ranfurly Shiold to-day. H. Smith, the centrethreequarter, injured an ankle while boarding a tram last evening and is replaced by H. J. Fookes. The Wellington team will be without B. S. Sadler, who is unwell, and will be replaced by E. W. Tindill. If Pollock, does not play Varton will take his place. The Wellington team is as follows:— Backs.—Pollock, Edwards, Fleming, Nees, Griffiths, Baldwin, Tindill. Forwards.—Leahy, Lamboume, Hull, Devine, Fraser-Smith, Wells, Lamason and Andrews.

ATHLETICS COLLEGIATE CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. At the first annual meeting of the Collegiate Athletic Club, Mr H. E. T. Sutton was elected chairman. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr C. A. Stewart; president, Mr J. Blampied; vice-presidents, Messrs A. Cartwright, H. E. T. Sutton, R. G. Webb, R. Parker, G. Beer and Vial; honorary secretary, Mr L. B. Winsloe; treasurer, Mr G. Murdoch; coach, Mr A. Cartwright; club captain, Mr M. Baird; deputyclub captain, Mr L. Whittington; record clerk, Mr H. Pickford; committee, Messrs W. Forde, W. Giles, J. Agnew, N. Eades, N. Checketts, N. Murphy, P. Giles and M. Farmer.

The subscription for the season was fixed at 2/6. It was decided to allow Technical College students free membership. The official club nights were fixed for Tuesday and Thursday, and the opening date was fixed for November 1. During the evening Mr H. E. T. Sutton spoke of the benefits obtained through the correct training taught in a club such as the one just formed. RIFLE SHOOTING THE THORNBURY CLUB. At the wind-up shoot of the Thornbury Miniature Rifle Club, several members of the Southland Association were present. The shooting for the night took the form of the own handicap system. H. Haywood won the prize on the count back from T. Christie and O. Fallow.

TENNIS

MAKAREWA CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Makarewa Tennis Club was held on Thursday, the president, Mr D. F. Leckie, presiding over a big attendance of members. The annual report stated that the finances, in spite of a large contribution towards the laying down of a new court, still remained fairly sound, the present credit balance being £l5 13/4, with no accounts outstanding. The membership of the club continued to be well maintained, 12 women and 14 men being financial, while 12 junior members joined the club during the season. The splendid form and enthusiasm shown by the juniors augured well for the future of the club and for tennis generally. Two teams were entered in the Southland Lawn Tennis Association’s Invercargill competitions, the intermediate team winning the shield for its grade, its record being 11 matches won out of 12. The C grade

team also put up a greatly improved performance, winning seven of its matches and losing four. This team was again runner-up in the C grade knockout competition held at the end of the season. The club’s congratulations were offered to Misses L. Glennie and E. McIvor who were selected to represent Town against Central and to Miss L. Glennie on her being selected as a member of the successful Southland senior basketball team and of the South Island team against the North Island. It also congratulated the four Makarewa School children who gained success at the Southland primary tennis championships. For the first time since the foundation of the club, championships were completed last season with the following results: Women’s singles, Miss L. Glennie 1, Miss A. Hermann 2; women’s doubles, Misses L. and C. Glennie 1, Miss A. Horman and Mrs E. Mortimer 2; mixed doubles, Miss L. Glennie and E. Mclvor 1, Miss C. Glennie and J. McClean 2; men’s singles, J. McClean 1, E. Mclvor 2; men’s doubles, E. Mclvor and J. McClean 1, A. Harvey and D. F. Leckie 2. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Tire opening day was arranged for Saturday, September 26. A Yankee tournament will be held. Mr Leckie, in moving a hearty vote of thanks to Mr E. Callaghan, referred to his good work as secretary of the club since its foundation. The motion was carred by acclamation.
