LAWN TENNIS

INVERCARGILL CLUB ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Invercargill Lawn Tennis Club was held in Everybody’s last evening. In the absence of the president, Mr L. K. Lopdell presided over a good attendance of members. The annual report stated that the season could be considered a very successful one from a playing point of view. The senior A team again won the senior championship. The other teams—senior - B, intermediate and . C grade—did reasonably well, fulfilling all their engagements. The club championships were carried through fairly well. Miss Rein again annexed tne women’s singles. The men’s singles had not been completed. A play-off was required between Messrs Rout, Shand and Cockerill to decide this event. The club was again well represented in the Southland team. The members selected were Miss M. Rein and Messrs A. J. Beaker and L. T. Cockerill. Mr Deaker, the club captain, retained the Galloway Cup. He put up a very creditable performance in defeating W. G. Robertson, the ex-South Island singles champion. The club’s finances were again a matter of vital importance. As disclosed by the balance-sheet it had ended the year with a small deficiency. This was due to a very depleted membership. The executive could not stress too strongly the need for enrolling new members. Members were asked to do all they could to bring along new members and help the club to get back to a good financial position. The courts were in fair order and should meet the requirements for the coming season. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, Mr Lopdell urged upon members the need for fresh blood. Unless new members were secured—and this entailed a certain amount of self-sacrifice and. energy—the club’s position would be in no way improved, he said. Socially, and from a playing point of view, the season had been a very successful one. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. . . Mr Lopdell presented Miss Rein with the cup for the winner of the women’s singles championship. The following office-bearers were elected:—President. Dr J. G. Macdonald: vice-presidents, Messrs L. R. Lopdeli, D. McDonald, W. Hamilton and G. J. Reed; committee, Messrs A. Deaker, L. Larcombe and I. Shand, Misses M. Rein, U. Murdoch and E. Wann; social committee, Misses Wann, Basstian, Rein, Murdoch and Shand; secretary, Mr L. T. Cockerill; treasurer, Mr E. Rout; auditor, Mr W. Haworth; club captain, Mr A. J. Deaker; deputycaptain, Miss M. Rein; delegates to Southland Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs G. J. Reed and A. J. Deaker. Opening day was fixed for September 26. when a Yankee tournament would be held. Several new members were elected. It was decided to. again offer free membership to two girls at the Southland Girls’ High School and to two boys at the Southland Boys’ High School. The annual subscriptions were fixed as follows: Men under 21, £1; men over 21, £2; women, £1 10/-.

ROWING

SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Southland Rowing Association was held on Wednesday evening. Mr C. Henderson presided over the following delegates'. Messrs S. Adamson, M. Officer (Railway), E. J. McLauchlan, C. W. Wilson, M. Pasco (Invercargill), D. Mathieson, L S. McNeill, J. Frew (Riverton), C. Hunter, G. Barton and A. Morrison (Awarua). The annual report stated _ that the balance-sheet showed a credit balance in the general account of £32, in the oar account £34 13/3, in the eight-oar account and balance of assets over liabilities £5 16/8. This financial position was very creditable to the association and left it in a very healthy position to begin the 1936-37 season. During the year the association was fortunate in getting donations towards its funds, the most notable of these being a donation of £32 from the Sports Trust. This money was placed in a special oar account for the purpose of buying oars for the eight this season. All regattas under the jurisdiction of the association were held in favourable weather, and the racing was good throughout, the prize money being evenly distributed amongt the clubs. In conjunction with the Southland Yacht Club a small regatta was held in Invercargill. Another association regatta was held at Bluff, when a trial race between Otago and Southland eights was staged. The Otago crew secured a narrow victory. Eight-Oar Race Supported.

The Wellington Amateur Rowing Association wrote asking for support in a movement to institute an eight-oar race on the annual championship regatta programme, and, if necessary, to delete either the pairs or double sculls, or both, in order to achieve this. “The reason for suggesting the deletion of the pairs or double sculls titles, or both,” explained the letter, “is ithat there must be one hour between each championship event, and five ■ championships might make the programme unwieldy. In recent years ! these two events have drawn comparatively few entries.” After some discussion it was agreed to support the Wellington Association providing the innovation was not made ! a t the sacrifice of the other two races. There was some discussion on the question of selecting a representative crew, members present seeking a decision on the activities of the selectors. It was decided that the selectors should pick a representative crew consisting of the best eight rowers in the (province, whether they came from different clubs or not. i The following office-bearers were elected:—President, Mr C. Henderson (re-elected); vice-presidents. Messrs E. Budd, S. W. McNeil and E. J. McLauchlan; secretary, Mr A. M. Imbs (re-elected); assistant secretary, Mr M. C. Officer; certifying council, Messrs C. Hunter, S. Adamson and J. Frew; regatta representatives, Mr D. Mathieson (Riverton) . and Mr C. Henderson (Bluff) auditor, Mr R. N. Todd (reflected); selectors, Messrs S. Adamson, 'K. McKenzie and J. Frew; emergency committee, Messrs E. J. McLauchlan, C. ; Henderson and M, C. Officer. Mr A. Cockroft was nominated as a member of the New Zealand Council. CRICKET UNION CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Union Cricket Club was held in Everybody’s last evening, the president, Mr A. W. Jones, presiding over an attendance of 20 members. The annual report stated that the club was able to field four elevens last season, as the numerical strength of the previous season was maintained. The. seniors did very well, being placed in first position in their grade table. This was the

first occasion in twelve years that the club had gained this distinction. There was no senior B competition and the second eleven played in the junior A competition, gaining fifth place. Adverse weather robbed it of a higher position. There were also defections which could not be filled from the lower grades. The junior B eleven again did well, gaining sixth place. As in past years it was unable to obtain the support of the lower grade to make good its shortages of players. The third grade side acquitted itself well, finishing in fourth position. The best individual performances were by A. T. Anderson, 114 against Colts, and A. Mudie, 99 against Old Boys. G. Marshall obtained good bowling figures, being a tower of strength to the side. The club congratulated C. Brew, V. Poole, G. Marshall and A. T. Anderson upon their selection in the Southland team.

The chairman complimented the club on its successes last year and wished it success in the coming season. Election of Officers.

The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr C. W. Patton; president, Mr A. W. Jones; vice-presidents, Messrs A. Anderson, W. Jones, R. T. Barnett, P. Brass, A. Wachner, H. The Southland Miniature Rifle Association fired a return match with the Otago Miniature Rifle Association at Dunedin, Otago winning by 37 points. The shooting was of a high standard, the scores being as follows: — Otago.—A team, 781; B team, 919. Southland. —A team, 7GO; B team, 903. Twelve men competed in the A team, the 10 highest scores counting. Fourteen men a-side competed in the B team match, the 12 highest scores counting.

The president of the Otago Miniature Rifle Association, Mr R. Bruce, congratulated the Southland teams on their good showing. The Southland Association had been formed only two months ago and some of the Southland competitors had taken up shooting only this year. He hoped the fixture would become an annual event. Mr D. G. Davies, president of the Southland Association, replied on behalf of the visitors. He took the opportunity of thanking his own country club members for making such an effort to attend the shoot. Mr Davies announced that Mr W. Graham had donated a cup for competition between Southland and Otago to be shot for when the Rugby matches took place in the representative cities. The team with the highest aggregate for the two matches would hold the cup for the ensuing 12 months. The cup, to be called the “Graham Cup,” was then passed round for inspection. Mr Bruce said that both associations would look forward with great pleasure to the battle for the cup. The Otago Association decided to send Mr Graham a letter of appreciation and thanks for his thoughtful action in donating such a fine trophy. R.S.A. MINIATURE CLUB. The Thursday night shoot took place on the R.S.A. Miniature Rifle Club’s range last evening, there being a fair attendance. The winner of the nightly trophy was F. E. Wright, with 79 off the rifle.
