TENNIS CLUB’S COURTS

CONTROL BY COUNCIL OPPOSED At last evening’s meeting of the Invercargill Lawn Tennis Club there was an animated discussion on the advisability of sending a deputation to wait on the Reserves Committee of the City Council concerning a proposal to hand over the courts to the council. The proposal, which was not adopted, suggested that the council should lease the courts to the club at a nominal rental and that the courts should be available to outsiders on the payment of a fee. Mr A. J. Deaker said that he was against the proposal because, despite the financial difficulties the club was encountering, such an arrangement would mean the loss of its identity, and this was to be deplored. There might be something to be said for the proposal if no. outsiders were to be admitted. Mr D. McDonald said that he was in favour of a deputation of some sort waiting on the Reserves Committee as some good should surely result. He was not, however, in favour of handing over all the club’s assets to the council. Mr L. R. Lopdell said he was in agreement with Mr Deaker. He felt that should the proposal be gone on with there would be a resultant loss in club spirit. Mr G. J. Reed said that before a deputation waited on the council complete unanimity was necessary among the members. Mr L. Larcombe said he thought that something could be done in the matter of improvements to the courts if a deputation should wait on the council. Mr McDonald moved that a deputation wait on the Reserves Committee of the City Council to see if some improvements could be carried out to the courts and surroundings. This motion was carried unanimously. Messrs Lopdell, McDonald and Deaker were appointed a deputation.
