MINOR MATTERS DISCUSSED

Passing Of Five

Bills

MORTGAGE AMENDMENTS DELAYED DRAFTING DIFFICULTIES EXPERIENCED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) Wellington, September 17. Owing to difficulty experienced in drafting numerous amendments to the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Bill, the House of Representatives today was forced to devote its attention to matters of minor importance. However, there was a burst of activity, as a result of which five Bills were passed. The annual report of the Department of Agriculture was tabled at the opening of the sitting, and subsequently some time was spent in consideration of reports from select committees. The most important of these was the report of the Public Petitions (M to Z) Committee on the petition of New Zealand Airways Ltd. concerning its inability to obtain a trunk air route licence. The committee recommended most favourable consideration of the company’s claims. Government Bills.

Two Government Bills were discussed by members at some length. These were the Fisheries Amendment Bill, which provides for increases in the fishing licence fees chargeable by acclimatization societies and the payment of part of the increase to the Government, to be devoted to fresh water fish research, and the Law Reform Bill, a highly technical measure designed to bring into operation in New Zealand certain ..changes made recently in the law of Great Britain. Both Bills were put through all their stages and passed.

The balance of the sitting was given over to the passing of the Nelson Diocesan Trust Board Empowering Bill and two local Bills, the Auckland City Abattoir Bill and the Nelson Waterworks Extension Amendment Bill. All three were passed virtually without discussion and the House rose at 9.35 p.m.

Before the adjournment the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) stated that it was hoped to have the amendments to the Mortgagors and Lessees Rehabilitation Bill ready for introduction to-morrow morning, when the committee stages of the Bill would be continued.
