Fifty Tears Ago To-day
(From The Southland Times.) SEPTEMBER 18, 1886. Election at Otautau.—The election of commissioners for the Otautau Town Board took place on Wednesday. There were nine candidates for the five vacancies and great interest was evinced in the election by the ratepayers, nearly the whole of those residing in the township voting. The result of the poll was: John Gardiner, 109; William Affleck, 80; Alexander Dean, 79; James Quin, 65; Richard Ford, 59; R. Campbell, 55; J. Seehof, 54; W. Walker, 54; G. A. Wohlman, 15. The first five members were declared elected. A Ducking.—A young man named “Fred,” a fisherman on the cutter Annie, had a narrow escape from drowning while coming across the straits from Ruapuke yesterday. A sea struck the cutter forward where the man was standing and threw him overboard, but very fortunately the owner of the craft, Mr Tregurthen, who was steering at the time, was able to stoop over and catch him as the cutter sailed past. Further than getting a ducking he was no worse for his immersion. Football. — Wellington, September 17: There was fine weather and l a dry ground for the match between Wellington and New South Wales. The Wellington team were keen favourites and scored a goal and a try in the first five minutes. The final score was 18-nil in favour of Wellington. The Australians seemed stale and played without much dash.
Fire at Dipton—On Thursday night the house of Mr Robert Cowie, of West Dipton, was totally destroyed by fire.
