Christchurch, August 14. The weather was again fine for the racing at Addington to-day and the track was in good order. The attendance was large with Southlanders still present in force. Mataunga won the Midwinter Handicap at a long price and investors received an early setback. Worthy Star, Resound and Silk Coat broke early, and when they had settled down Rustle, Gala Day and Little Reta were showing out from Mataunga. Isabel Patch was soon handy. There was little change in the order until the tanks, where Wahnooka and P.esound broke badly. Once in line Rustle just showed from Little Reta, Isabel Patch, Mataunga and Norman Fox. At the distance it was a fine race. Then an opening occurred and Kennerly shot Mataunga through, getting up in the last stride to beat Rustle by a neck. Little Reta was a head away, then came Isabel Patch, Norman Fox and Gala Day. The winner trotted a fine race, but was lucky to get an opening in the straight. Rustle was always prominent and so was Little Reta. Norman Fox did not run on as well as usual in a fast run race. The

first half-mile was run in lmin. 13 2-ssec, and the mile in 2min. 19sec.

Favourite Fails. A good favourite, Blair Athol, failed in the Lightning Handicap in which Greenmantle recorded a fine performance. Broughshane led away from Greenmantle, Full Hand, Gallant Knight and Blair Athol. The race is easily described. The order was unchanged to three furlongs from home, where Blair Athol broke badly. Broughshane led into the straight from Gallant Knight, Greenmantle, Full Hand and Sterling Lady. It was a great race home, Greenmantle beating Happy Knight by half a length, a neck ahead of Sterling Lady. Broughshane was next, then Gallant Knight, Kibo and Full Hand. Greemantle ran a fine race and displayed a good burst of speed in the final stages when he got a fortunate opening. Happy Knight came from last but one over the final two furlongs and his was a great effort. Sterling Lady was badly interfered with when Blair Athol broke. Broughshane did not see it out. Gallant Knight failed badly in the run home after having every chance. Blair Athol was going great guns when he broke.

De Soto proved himself a great horse in winning the National Handicap after being interfered with. Willow Wave was slow away at the start but did not lose much ground. Vesuvius took up the role of pacemaker from Sure, Llewellyn’s Pride, Rey Spec and Rollo. After a round the order was still the same, but Sure broke badly at the bottom turn .and sent De Soto back to second last.

Marie Celeste won the Islington Handicap well after going a fine race which was marred by a bad accident near the winning post. Marie Celeste began well, but the early leaders were Golden Cross,, Subsidy and Isabel Derby. When the stands were reached Plain Pearl led Subsidy, Arachne and Marie Celeste. The order was unchanged until reaching the straight, where Subsidy led Plain Pearl, Rongomai Village Guy and Marie Celeste. Half-way up the straight Rongomai doubled over and fell. " Isabel Derby went over him and shot Kennerley through the air. Plain Pearl also came down. Kennerley was taken to hospital. It was a close race home, but Marie Celeste finished well and beat Golden Cross, who came again, by two lengths. Pot Luck was two lengths away, then came Subsidy and Big Author. The winner was splendidly handled. Golden Cross ran on again after ap-

pearing to be beaten. Pot Luck appears to be better as a sprinter. A Good Sprinter.

Cloudy Range, a warm fancy for the Farewell Handicap, proved himself above the ordinary in winning. Vesuvius began best, but before going far the order was Cloudy Range, Supertax, Vesuvius, Rey Spec and Rollo. The order changed very little and when they entered the home stretch Cloudy Range was still leading from Supertax, Rollo, Rey Spec, Blue Mountain and Gold Tinge. Cloudy Range was not troubled to beat Rey Spec by a length and a-half. Gold Tinge was half a length away, a head in front of Raydus; then came Supertax and Blue Mountain. Cloudy Range is without doubt a fine sprinter and appeared to have the race in hand a long way from home. Rey Spec finished on well for Berry and so did Gold Tinge. AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY CLUB INCOME OF £210,476 FOR YEAR. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 10 p.m.) Sydney, August 14. The annual report of the Australian Jockey Club reveals that the income for the year amounted to £210,476. The prize money, covering 28 days’ racing, totalled £94,155 and totalisator receipts, including eight days at Warwick Farm, were £756,244. The State Government received £112,743 in totalisator revenue and admission tax.

I His great speed, however, enabled De Soto to recover in another round. Passing the stand for the last time, Vesuvius was leading from Llewellyn’s Pride, Rey Spec, Tempest, Sunny Morn, Willow Wave and Rollo. When they straighti ened up in the back De Soto revealed a great burst of speed, and when the tanks were reached he was in front and led Llewellyn’s Pride, Rollo, Rey Spec ' and War Buoy. It was no race home, De Soto winning by three lengths from Llewellyn’s Pride, who was a length , ahead of Rey Spec, a head away. Then came Harold Logan, Willow Wave, Sunny Morn and Graham Direct. A Great Horse. There is no doubt that De Soto is a great horse. He gave a fine field three seconds start in a mile and a half and beat them easily. Llewellyn’s Pride and Tempest ran fine races and so did Rey Spec. Willow Wave failed in the final dash. War Buoy is not right yet. Reporter has been consistent and he won the Federal Handicap rather easily at a good price. Gamble went away badly, while Francis Lincoln was slow out. Reporter began well and was soon in front from Bonny Azure, Grand Mogul and Francis Lincoln. The race was run in this order right to the straight, where Grand Mogul made his run, but he had no chance with Reporter, the world’s record holder for a mile in saddle and he won by two lengths from Grand Mogul. Bonny Azure was five lengths away, then there was a gap to Francis Lincoln. Gamble was a big disappointment. The winner is a great sprinter, but Grand Mogul’s driver appeared over-confident and gave the leader too big a start. Rocks Ahead, driven with excellent judgment, won the Heathcote Handicap. Waress and Gunfire broke early and Rocks Ahead led away from Aristotle, Bingen Palm and Young Frank, the order being the same right to the straight. Rocks Ahead was always in front and won easily by two lengths from Raydus and Grace McElwyn. Young Frank was next followed by Bingen Palm and Aristotle. Raydus finished well, but had no chance with the winner. Young Frank was strongly fancied by his connections, but the distance was too far. Wrackler’s Success. Wrackler trotted a great race to win the Addington Handicap and record only his second success as a trotter. Flotsam broke early and Garner opened up a gap from Norma Bingen and Airflow. After a round the order was Garner, Norma Bingen, Airflow, Wrackler and Guy o’ Mine. Into the straight Wrackler finished on strongly to beat Sea Gift by half a length. Norma Bingen was a neck away; then came Discord, Garner and New Metford. The winner is the most versatile horse in the Dominion and trotted a great race. Sea Gift ran a fine race. Discord broke soon after the start and appeared a good thing beaten. She is a fine trotter.
