JUSTICES OF THE PEACE
ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Southland Justices of the Peace Association was held in the Federal Banquet Hall yesterday afternoon, Mr W. A. Ott presiding. In moving the adoption of the report (which has been published) and bal-ance-sheet, Mr Ott said that the association had had a quiet year, a successful attempt having been made to build up its finances. It was expected to have regular functions during the coming year. Mr Ott was re-elected president, Mr A. E. Lea was elected a vice-president, and Mrs M. A. S. Brown and Mr M. Miller were elected to the council. Mr A. W. Jones was re-elected registrar. Afternoon tea was. served when the business of the meeting had been disposed of, and Mr A. McCarthy spoke entertainingly of Samoa and the psychology of its people. He described the events leading up to the Mau troubles, and explained the reactions of the natives to European influence. Mr McCarthy was thanked by acclamation.
