THE WEATHER SOUTHLAND FORECAST.

(Special to The Times.) Wellington, August 14. Following is the Dominion Observa- . tory’s special weather forecast for Southland: — Moderate to strong north-west to westerly winds reaching gale force at times; weather squally and changeable with frequent showers, more especially in coastal and western areas. Hail and thunder probable in places. Temperatures mild. Seas rough to high. Following is the Dominion forecast.— Weather still changeable and squally, with intermittent rain in districts with a westerly aspect. Some thunder and hail probable from Taranaki southwards, and in far southern parts. Mainly fair to fine, however, but with isolated showers in eastern districts south of East Cape. Tempeia-

tures mild. General Situation.—While the pressure has remained high to the far north, a series of intense westerly depressions has continued to move from southern Australia across the Tasman Sea and the Dominion. Winds.— North-westerly to westerly, moderate to strong generally, and still reaching gale force in places. Seas.—New Zealand waters, rough on the West Coast and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, moderate in coastal waters elsewhere, but rather rough offshore south of East Cape; eastei n Tasman Sea, westerly winds, moderate in the far northern portion, with moderate seas, still strong and of gale force at times elsewhere, with rough to high seas.

Rain fell in Invercargill yesterday morning, but the weather cleared about midday and the afternoon was fine. At one o’clock this morning the weather was fine and calm. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows:— This morning (rising) 29,38 in. Yesterday 29.16 in. Thursday 29.36 in.
