UNION FOR FARM HANDS.

To the Editor.

Sir, —I am pleased to see that farm hands are about to take a stand to better their position. For the last 20 years they have never been paid in proportion to other labourers and are now asked to work 60 hours a week for £2, with food provided, when other labourers are getting £4 or £5 a week of 40 hours. Many farmers say they cannot afford to pay £4 a week. Do I take it that farmers have to have sweated labour? If a farmer has to pay a fair wage to his employees he will employ less and produce less and will receive a higher price for his produce. Is it necessary that farmers should be on the verge of bankruptcy to make them produce, as the past slump has proved?—Yours, etc., FARMER. Gore, August 12, 1936.
