A Box Ottoman
Here is a simply made and very useful box ottoman. Buy 3Jyds of pretty cretonne. 3yds of plain material such as casement cloth
for the lining and a baking powder box which may usually be bought for 2s 6d from the grocer or from the manufacturer. Take the box to pieces carefully and cut the two sides into shapes as shown in figure 2. . , , • For the lid, cut up into strips one of the boards from the top as shown in figure 3 and glue small blocks to each side of every strip. Cut two pieces of wood the same length as the top of the box, that is, 3ft 2in and nail these two lengths to the strips going across with 2 inch flat head nails as shown in the illustration. Fit two 3 inch butt hinges to the lid and the box before upholstering the lid, but take the hinges off again while you are upholstering and screw them on when the lid and the box are covered. Cover the sides and the ends of the box separately before nailing
them together. Tack the lining to the bottom of the box and then tack the lining to the sides and ends before nailing up the sides, ends and bottom. By doing this no joins will show when the ottoman is finished. Cover the under side of the lid with lining before covering the outside. To upholster the lid tack strips of 2 inch webbing crosswise, drawing them taut, and tack a thin cover of canvas across the top of the lid. Take 41b of flock and tease it until it becomes fluffy. Spread it across the canvas evenly. Cut the cretonne into pieces a little larger than the wood to allow for turning the edges under.
Cut the cretonne into pieces a little larger than the wood to allow for turning the edges under. Screw the hinges on to the lid and on to the box and attach four castors on each corner. To lift the lid make a tab from Bin of gimping cut to shape and covered with cretonne as shown in figure 1.
