SOUTHDOWN SHEEP

FURTHER SHIPMENT TO AUSTRALIA Evidence of the increasing demand for New Zealand bred stud sheep is very apparent from the number of animals purchased by Australian breeders recently. The Wanganella sailed last week with a very choice consignment of Southdown sheep, selected and purchased through the Stud Stock Department of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., for Mr H. A. Lindsay-Field, Warbreccan Station, Deniliquin, New South Wales. The sheep going forward will form an addition to Mr Field’s Southdown stud. A number of the sheep were purchased in Canterbury from well-known breeders. One stud ram comes from the Canterbury Seed Company’s notable Oakleigh stud. This animal, a typical specimen of the breed, standing on short legs with a good masculine head and very even wool, will do well in Australia and should create great interest in the Commonwealth. Thirtyfive ewe hoggets bred by Messrs Frizzel Bros., West Eyreton, are a particularly nice line of even, well bred quality sheep with a good length of body and typical Down wool. A number of ram hoggets also came from Canterbury, 43 were bred by Mr J. B. Starky, of Amberley, and nine came from Mr F. J. Jenkins’ well-known flock. These sheep were looking well in spite of the recent boisterous weather prevailing in Canterbury, and should develop into very typey rams with great constitutions. In addition to the sheep from Canterbury, Mr Field purchased 60 Southdown ram hoggets from Mr D. W. Reid, of Feilding. A number of other hoggets that had been selected were unable to come forward owing to the shortage of shipping space. These sheep will be shipped later in the month. A stud Romney ram hogget from Messers Voss Bros., Karere, and a stud Southdown ram hogget bred by Mrs W. J. Slack, Bunnythorpe, were forwarded by the same vessel for transhipment to Adelaide. These sheep were purchased on behalf of Mr A. Koch, of Western District, South Australia, to mate with the 50 Romney ewes and 25 Southdown ewes purchased by him and shipped to South Australia earlier in the year.
