England’s Team For Australia SEVEN PLAYERS INVITED (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) London, July 20. The Marylebone Cricket Club announces that G. O. Allen (Middlesex) will captain the team to Australia R. W. V. Robins, W. R. Hammond, M. Leyland, H. Verity, B. Fishlock and J. Hardstaff have also been invited. Captain R. Howard, secretary of the Lancashire Club, has ’ etn invited to act as manager, subject to the approval of the Lancashire committee.

It was announced that no further invitations were being issued before July 29 Mr Howard Marshall, in The Daily Telegraph, says that Allen in 1936 has proved an excellent and inspiring leader. He is a most enthusiastic cricketer, a fine all rounder and a determined fighter. The remainder virtually chose themselves. Fishlock is a remarkably dependable left-hander, and a counter to the Australian spin bowlers. INDIA v. DERBYSHIRE. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, July 20. In its match against Derbyshire All India in its first innings made 228 (Copson five for 44). Derbyshire in its first innings made "60 (C. Elliott 77; Bannerjee four for 51). India in its second innings has lost no wickets for 37. BOXING CAREY KNOCKS OUT MORRIGHAN. (United Press Association.) Christchurch, July 21. In a scheduled 10 round professional welterweight boxing contest to-night, W. Carey (lOst. 51b.) Canterbury, knocked out B. Morrighan (lOst. 71b.) Marlborough, in the 10th round. Carey was the more agressive fighter, and was ahead on points when Morrighan was felled with a right hook to the solar plexus. The crowd protested noisily, evidently under the impression that the blow was low. SHARKEY TO MEET LOUIS. FORMER CHAMPION’S “COMEBACK.” (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Rimu (Mr Hargest); Woodlands B v. Morton Mains B, at 2.45 at Woodlands (Mr Hargest); Rimu B a bye. THE MENZIES ASSOCIATION. (By “Shoot.”) The Menzies Basketball Association’s matches were played in splendid weather. In fact, the sun was rather troublesome at some of the courts. In the B grade competition matches there were no surprises, although it was expected that Glenham would provide Wyndham District High School A with much stronger opposition. Wyndham defaulted to Waimahaka. On the Menzies Ferry court, the Edendale and Menzies Ferry A grade teams played a back match, which was remarkable for the number of accidents. Fortunately, none were serious. The Menzies Ferry team was the chief loser in this way, and as a result of the rearrangements made in the team it was very weak, especially in the centre line. The score of 15 goals to 9 is a fair indication of the run of play. The Edendale forwards, particularly K. Edgar, were consistent throughout, and they received a good supply of ball from the centres. Mr Foxon refereed. The Edendale B team had no difficulty in beating the Wyndham District High School No. 2 team, the score being 20 goals to 5. Again the school forwards failed to take advantage of the many opportunities presented to them by a very active centre line. The Edendale team was well-balanced, and played steadiy throughout. Mrs W. Lennon was the referee. On the Glenham court, a very onesided game was played between Wyndham District High School A and Glenham, the score being 21 goals to 4. In the winning team, all the forwards, J. Rabbidge, M. McKerrow and M. Hunter, played well. M. Harley was the best centre and W. Smith the outstanding defender. It was pleasing to see less of that common fault among the school forwards, one-handed shooting. E. Briggs, in the centre line of the losing team, played well, but the team generally lacked its usual vim. It will have to play much better to beat any of the stronger teams. Mr A. Ferguson refereed. The Menzies Ferry B team played one of its best games this season when it defeated Mataura Island comfortably by 14 goals to 8. It was an interesting game throughout, and both teams gave a good all-round exhibition in all thirds. Mrs Dunlop refereed. The Menzies Association’s teams entered for Country Day did not bring home any trophies, but they were not disgraced. The A team beat Northern by 17 goals to 13, and Western, winners of the section, only beat it by 22 goals to 17, after a good game. The Menzies team should have benefited considerably, and should win most of its other representative fixtures this season. At the same time it cannot be said that the team was the strongest that could have been selected from the _ talent available. In the B team, especially, it was apparent on Country Day that drastic alterations will have to be made, especially in the forward and centre thirds. The strongest thirds in both teams were the defence, K. Gorman in the A team being outstanding. The A team’s forwards J. Palmer, E. Rhodes, and K. Edgar, also, were well up to the standard of the winning teams forwards. . The positions of the teams m the B grade competitions, after last Wednesday’s play, are as follow:—

*Entered in second round only. Draw for To-day. The B grade matches in the Menzies Association’s competition will be continued to-day, and the draw is as follows: —Seaward Downs v. Wyndham, at Seaward Downs; Menzies Ferry v. Edendale, at Edendale; Glenham v. Wyndham District High School B, at Glenham; Waimahaka v. Mataura Island, at Mataura Island; Wyndham District High School A a bye. CENTRAL DISTRICT GAMES. (By “Shoot.”) The meeting of Rovers and Ryal Bush in the second round of the senior competition will be the deciding game of this section. Probably Rovers and Ryal Bush will meet for the Kia Ora Rose Bowl. The performances of the Central team in the Country Day fixtures at Invercargill on Saturday have given district supporters fresh confidence. C. Moylan was unfortunate to meet with fairly severe injuries on Saturday, and will be unavailable for a week or two. This accident should not jeopardize her chance of gaining a place in the Central team for later fixtures however, as she is one of the most consistent centres in the competition. In the event of Central retaining the right to represent Southland Minor at the New Zealand tournament it is suggested that P. Calder (Eastern) will be given an opportunity of gaining a place in the forward line of the chosen side. Two of the leading Central forwards are unavailable, and the inclusion of the Eastern representative would strengthen the line. That the Central Sub-Association was permitted to select players outside its own district for inclusion in the Southland Minor team was mentioned at an earlier meeting of the sub-association. Little interest was taken in last week’s senior games. Winton defaulted to Ryal Bush. The defeat of Spar Bush by Browns on the latter’s courts was a surprise. Spar Bush has shown good form this season, and has to its credit a success over the competition.

leaders, Ryal Bush. Browns played a good game, and profited by the errors of the opposing forward line. Rovers proved too strong for Oreti and won by 22 goals to 11. The Central District junior team which was successful on Saturday must be one of the best sides in this section that has been available for some seasons, although the grade has always been a fairly strong one. There are no weak links in the forward line. G. Morgan and C. Tippett combine well together, while A. Clausen is one of the most accurate forwards in the district. M. Mclntyre is a promising High School player. H. Nicholson (centre) and J. Nicholson (defence) both graduates from High School ranks, are young players of promise. P. McGillivray is a defender of more than average ability, while R. Balch was the mainstay in this line of the High School team. R. Payne and N. Kettle, both of Limehills, are a strong pair in the centre third, and both are playing well up to their best: Many young players are included, and all should benefit by the experience. Great interest was taken in the announcement of the Central team for the Country Day games on Saturday. It was evident from the results of recent games that some of the leading players were not in their best form, and others were unavailable. It is unfortunate that Mrs Crisp is now unavailable after taking part in several representative practices; had this been known earlier another player could have been chosen and a better idea of the strength of the team would have been available. J. Ritchie, who is likely to leave the district shortly, is also unavailable. The forward line is a fairly strong one. The experience of N. Norman will be invaluable, while the form of E. Dixon suggests that she is capable of replacing Mrs Crisp with credit. Her work in the open is excellent. E. Bruland is also an active player. These two are newcomers to senior representative honours. T. Valli, B. Andrews and C. Moylan represent a strong, if not brilliant, centre line. A good understanding between this trio has been apparent in games to date. T. Valli is the all-rounder of the side, and can be played equally well in any third. At Invercargill on Saturday D. Campbell, who replaced C. Moylan, gave a much improved showing. E. Pierce is the only member of the defence who has represented the district before, and her form has been well up to standard.

L. Stevenson is one of the most promising of the younger defenders, and thoroughly deserves her place; her sound court-work suggests a good knowledge of the requirements of defence. I. Campbell has improved with each game, and her height is a big asset. Both L. Stevenson and I. Campbell are newcomers to the Central team.
