OILFIELDS ON EAST COAST
NO GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. (United Press Association.) Wellington, June 16. A denial of the statement that the State intended to search for oil on the east coast of the North Island was made by the Minister of Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb). He says that he wants it made clear that he made no such announcement. Recently, it is true, he referred to intensive investigation by experts of the East Coast oilfields, but he gave no indication that the investigation or the experts would be in any way associated with the Government. The activities, if they come about, will be entirely sponsored by private interests. The Minister said that he had not been approached with any request for financial assistance from the Government towards the cost of investigation or any subsequent operations.
