INLAID AIR MAILS.

NEW “DRIVE” FOR BUSINESS FACILITIES NOT WIDELY USED A SPECIAL APPEAL To the Editor Sir, —The small number of inland air mail letters posted at Invercargill is convincing evidence that the business community does not appreciate the saving in time that accrues to users or the ultimate importance reasonable use of this facility will confer on the city. To illustrate the prompt despatch it assures senders, letters posted up to 8.15 at night are placed in Post Office mail boxes at Christchurch, Palmerston North, and Wellington early the following afternoon, while those directed to Auckland are available to addresses thirty six hours after being posted. Probably in many instances, proper use of this service will prove a useful and cheap substitute for telegraphic communication. It is anticipated that a feeder service from this centre to Mosgiel aerodrome is largely dependent on a reasonable volume of mail matter being forwarded by aeroplane, so it behoves the commercial community to give its utmost support to the existing air mail services if they wish an extension of the main trunk route to Invercargill. We will shortly have one of the finest and most conveniently situated aerodromes in the Dominion and with the rapid advance in aviation it would be regrettable if the citizens of Invercargill were excluded from this, the most modern and speedy method of transport. During the week a special effort is to be made to secure the support of the business people to give existing air mail facilities a fair trial. The total cost per letter to any Post Office in the north is only twopence and the saving in time should very well compensate for the slight additional postage. The Post Office officials are distributing air mail “stickers” this week to affix to envelopes and it is hoped that business men will cultivate the habit of using the air mail. In conclusion I trust this movement will commend itself to our Chamber of Commerce. —Yours, etc., H. J. MACALISTER, President, Southland Aero Club. Invercargill, June 13, 1936.
