(By “Stopwatch.”) The card for the Sapling Stakes meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club to-day is a particularly strong one. A number of the square gaiters engaged in the Longbeach Handicap have not much form to their credit, but Patty Todd’s solidness may gain her a place. Fantine is an American-bred mare, and at a recent matinee meeting displayed a torrent of speed. A repetition of this form would see her hard to dispose of on the front line. Parachute won decisively at Oamaru while Guy Hugo and Royal Parrish may be the best of the remainder. There will be support for Fantine, Parachute and Patty Todd. Renown’s Best is likely to be the public’s elect in the Trial Handicap, following a good second placing to Royal Doulton last week. The Grattan Loyal filly has been highly spoken of, and looks like playing an important part here. Fine Art is a more than useful three-year-old, while Post Haste has been expected to rise from the maiden ranks before now. Maltreaves has shown fine form on occasions, while Royal Doulton from 48 back is not out of it. The favoured may be: Renown’s Best, Maltreaves, Royal Doulton.

The Ashburton County Handicap (2m.) has drawn a first class field of 12. Cloudy Range won recently at Canterbury Park from 48 back, and will again have to be respected from the 60yds mark. De Soto is nicely placed off the front row, and if he starts there will be no need to look further for the first fancy. On recent form Raydus will have to be taken into account, while Taxpayer and Grace McElwyn may be the best of the remainder. In the absence of De Soto, Cloudy Range, Raydus and Grace McElwyn are likely to carry the confidence of many racegoers. Golden Mist is nicely placed in the Acton Handicap, and a repetition of his late efforts may find the Oamaru pacer hard to beat. In recent outings he has shown much better form than many have given him credit for. Stirling Lady off 12yds, would only need to be at the top of her form to make it hard for this field, but she cannot afford any self-imposed handicap at the start. Valdor, Rare Rey and Full Hand look the best of the remainder. Solid support is likely for Golden Mist, Stirling Lady and Valdor. The Mayfield Handicap, for square gaiters, will probably find King’s Guard and Discord, both on the front line, dominating the field as they did at Canterbury Park. The distance will suit King’s Guard better than Discord, whose staying qualities have .been a feature of her efforts. Fifa’s solidness will earn her respect, while Bessie Parrish looks the pick of the handicap lot. In what promises to be a., fine race, King’s Guard, Discord and Bessie Parrish may be favoured as they finished at Canterbury Park. There are several with good form to their credit in the Tinwald Handicap, and they may be named as follows: Gaillard, Sports Review, Lucky Jack, Ginger Jack, Carageen and Precious Metal. Gaillard was estimated to have gone 3.19 at Ashburton last Saturday, while Lucky Jack demonstrated he was much above average at Forbury. Sports Review has convinced the critics in his few outings to date, while Carageen and Precious Metal are both more than use-

ful. The public may find a favourite from Gaillard, Lucky Jack and Carageen. The Winter Handicap will be decided over a mile and a-half in saddle. Big Author and Morello appeal as a likely pair on the front line, while Noble Prince has only to begin correctly to take a power of beating. Rongomai is more than useful, while Rocks Ahead on 24 will make matters interesting. Noble Prince, Morello and Rocks Ahead are bound to have a combined army of followers. The contest for the New Zealand Sapling Stakes presents a very open aspect and it may be found in a large pool that Southern Chief, Parisienne and Becky Direct dominate. HAWKES BAY RACES Noon. HASTINGS HANDICAP. £7O. Hack conditions. Five and a-half furlongs.

RICHARDS AND ROSENBLOOM MENTIONED. In Invercargill Roy de Gans is the most talked-of boxer since Ambrose Palmer was down there a ’ couple of years ago (says the New Zealand Referee). So far he has had three contests in Southland for three wins. De Gans is a great draw-card in the south and there is some talk of the enterprising Southland Boxing Association entering into negotiations with the colourful, hard-hitting Australian, Ron Richards, with a view to inducing him to come to New Zealand and fight de Gans under its auspices. The possibilities of bringing Maxie Rosenbloom to New Zealand have also been tentatively discussed by the Southland Boxing Association and, if it should be successful in its business transactions with the former world’s cruiser champion, it would have to promote an open-air bout to accommodate the spectators. For some years now —ever since the major associations were affected by the depression and reactions following the Sarron-Donovan-Leckie-Blay boom—the Southland Boxing Association has been the most wide-awake association in New Zealand and, judging by its present activities and proposed projects for the near future, it is likely to maintain its prestige for some time to come. TENNIS ENGLISH CHAMPIONSHIPS. (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, June 11. The All England lawn tennis championships will begin at Wimbledon on June 22. The entries in the men’s singles are 118 and 86 women have entered.
