FIRST SHIELD MATCH
OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND Otago’s first match in defence of the Ranfurly Shield will be the game against Southland on August 1, and already one hears that Invercargill will observe a close holiday that day (observes a writer in Sporting Life). One thing is certain, and that is that many special trains will be required to bring the Maroon hordes to Dunedin. About three years ago, Canterbury had an attendance of over 24,000 for the Canterbury-Southland Shield match at Christchurch, and it certainly looks as if this figure will be eclipsed on August 1. The accommodation at Carisbrook is likely to be taxed to the utmost.
