The Waikato R.C. meeting to-day may throw more light on the A.R.C. Winter fixture.

Allegretta, who may race at Te Rapa to-day, has been jumping well in private.

The well-known sprinter, Silver Streak, has won over £4340 in stake money.

His cross-country win at the Waipa meeting puts Windsor Lad out of hunters’ class.

H. Wiggins, whose term of suspension is nearly out, rides Knight of Australia at Ellerslie.

A. E. Ellis will ride Rereatu, Wotan and Onewhetu at the Auckland R.C. meeting.

Lobengula (Night Raid) fell and broke a foreleg when on his way to Caulfield recently.

Two Queensland mares have arrived in Maoriland to be mated with SolicitorGeneral.

It will not surprise if Hall Mark is to take the place of his sire, Heroic, at the stud.

Retired from the turf, Hall Mark is a son of Heroic from Herowinkie (N.Z.).

Haere Tonu returned a record quote for Washdyke in scoring over battens on Saturday.

The Taranaki hack Glenthawn (second) ran a good race at the Waikato R.C. meeting.

Hunting Go made an encouraging debut as a hurdle racer at Washdyke on Saturday.

His success over the Te Rapa sticks will hearten Jolly Beggar’s friends for the G.N. Hurdles.

A good ’chaser in Rasouli came to an end in the Waikato Steeplechase on Saturday.

The Pakuranga Hunt Cup (Auckland) has been increased in value from £250 to £350.

The Thames-owned ’chaser, Roxy, a winner of late, is by Kilbroney (imp.)—Danesia.

The card for the Oamaru Jockey Club’s Winter meeting, on June 27, will comprise seven races.

The Geraldine R.C. has decided to support hunt clubs in trying to get trotting races on their programmes.

At the Oamaru J.C’s. Winter meeting a Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase, of £llO (2m.), will be decided.

The Geraldine R.C. is in a position to show a provisional profit for the season of £3Bl 10/9.

The South Canterbury J.C’s. meeting of last week completed Silver Streak’s programme for the season.

Sore after his fall at the recent Egmont meeting, Soloist may have a run at Te Rapa to-day.

Despite reports as to soreness, Soloist, topweight at 11.8, remains in the Great Northern Hurdle Race.

Thespis (10.7) is fancied in Auckland as likely to offer stern opposition in the G.N. Steeplechase.

Swift galloper, Ponty, is by Rosenor— Sporting Girl (a half-sister to the jumper Speakeasy).

None oi the riders (three) who suffered falls in the steeplechase at Timaru on Thursday was injured.

The very promising North Islander, Flammarion, has still to win £lB to put himself out of the hack class. His next outing will probably be at the Wanganui J.C’s. Winter meeting in June.

Mr C. Haddock, the Marton owner of jumpers, has been unfortunate of late. Invictus went lame recently and now his other hurdle racer, Brigadore, is in trouble and will be spelled.

Two excellent Hastings representatives have departed for the Great Northern campaign in Contact and Pakanui. The pair were galloping well prior to leaving home.

Trainer L. Knapp’s pupil, Forest Glow, was second in the Waikato Steeplechase on Saturday, and will be joined by Tail Light and Tangled in a visit to the Auckland R.C. Winter meeting.

The field for the Opihi Trot at Washdyke on Thursday numbered 25 starters, yet the wagering pool presented one of the smallest harness race totals experienced on the course for years. The Royal Doulton-William bracket was favoured and its possibilities probably restricted to wagering. The third selection, U. Scott, won, with (2) Maltravers and (3) Aide-de-Camp in the places. Of the bracketed favourites, Royal Doulton managed to secure fourth berth.

Haere Tonu, the five-year-old horse who set new dividend figures for Washdyke on Saturday when he accounted for the Pukaki Hurdles at the S.C.J.C. meeting, with the Invercargill-owned gelding Signaller acting as runner-up, ranks as a particularly well-bred performer and a fair winner across the flat. Mr Irving’s black horse is by Hunting Song (imp.) from Martianette, by Martian from Equitas, by Advance from Muriwai, by Torpedo (son of Musket) from Mystery Girl. Saturday’s sensational winner is a half-brother to Martian Chief, by Chief Ruler, and brother to the mare Hunting Lodge. Haere Tonu is anything but a generous galloper on the majority of occasions, but he was evidently in a better humour at Timaru.

The high-priced Jack Potts pacing filly, Royal Doulton, owned by Mr G. J. Barton, of Dunedin, was sent out strongly-fancied for the Wai-iti Trot at the S.C.J.C. meeting on Saturday, but had to strike her colours to Fay Rey, evidently one of the Key de Oro tribe. However, Royal Doulton displayed improving form, and like her dam, Quality, probably calls to time to discover her real merit.

A good steeplechaser in the making Rasouli, who broke his back in

the Waikato Steeplechase contest on Saturday, was an Austra-lian-bred gelding by Bernard (imp.) from Gipsy’s Warning, by Bardolph (imp.) from Bright Siren, by Bright Steel, and first saw the light of day in N.S.W. After winning the Styx Hack Hurdle Race at the N.Z. Grand National meeting of August 1934, he was purchased by Mr H. Elworthy, of South Canterbury, and trained by E. J. Ellis at Washdyke to win well over the battens. He was subsequently transferred to the stable of D. O’Connor, at Riccarton to be developed as a steeplechaser. He took to his new role in an encouraging fashion and recently won the Egmont Steeplechase easily. When he met his death last week, Mr Elworthy’s gelding was favoured for the Great Northern Hurdle Race and G.N. Steeplechase double at the A.R.C. Winter meeting, opening on May 30.

The Riccarton horseman, R. Beale, has suffered more than his share of injuries during the jumping season recently opened, but has made quick recoveries. However, a fractured collarbone as the result of a fall with Rasouli in the Waikato Steeplechase on Saturday, may keep him out of the saddle for some time, during the currency of the A.R.C.’s Great Northern meeting, which opens next week, at the very least. With Beale unable to ride in the meantime, the Riccarton trainer-jockey D. O’Connor, will probably have to depend upon G. Ridgway for Arctic Star in his Ellerslie engagements —O’Connor will ride Royal Limond himself.

In the shape of an B—7 fancy, the veteran cross-country performer, Billy Boy, came into his own again on Saturday at Te Rapa, when he won the Waikato Steeplechase in the hands of W. Rennie, a horseman of long service. Old Billy Boy, who was claimed to have lost his form of several seasons past, must have taken on a new lease of life. At home over the battens and between the flags Billy Boy won the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase of 1932, carrying 11.13 and with D. J. Burgess as his pilot.

The ex-Otago gelding Palatinate, by Paladin from All Style, was second in the Beach Welter Handicap, of £250 (one mile and 55 yards) in which another New Zealander in Whernside, ran unplaced. The five-year-old gelding Palatinate, was until recently owned by S. G. Ware, private trainer to the Dunedin sportsman, Mr G. J. Barton. At a sale of Mr Barton’s team in Melbourne some weeks ago, Palatinate was disposed of at 650 guineas to Mr R. McLeish, a local owner. THE TURF IN N.S.W. NEW ZEALANDERS UNPLACED. An inquiry was held into the running of Emissary compared with the first day, but after hearing the evidence of the trainer, J. C. Tomkinson, and the jockey, the stewards accepted the explanation that the conditions did not suit the horse on Thursday.

COMMENT ON THE RACING HAERE TONU’S BIG DIVIDEND. TRISOX UNLUCKY. (Special to The Times,) Timaru, May 23. The weather was perfect and the attendance good for the concluding day of the South Canterbury meeting. The track was showing the effects of frost when the racing began, but dried rapidly in the sunshine and became very fast for the winter season.

Giggleswick was scratched for the Pukaki Hurdles, and of the nine runners backers selected Solwit (399 tickets), Signaller (379) and Courtyard (348). Courtyard, Footwork and Nightcap led over the first two fences, but Courtyard made a faulty jump turning into the back, leaving Nightcap in front from Courtyard and Haere Tonu. Racing to the far turn Haere Tonu was in charge from Nightcap and Courtyard, but the last-named pair dropped back and round the top the order was Haere Tonu, Wexford Bridge, Hunting Go and Signaller. Haere Tonu was just clear of Signaller and Wexford Bridge at the last jump and stayed on to win by over two lengths from Signaller, who was the same distance in front of Wexford Bridge, with Hunting Go a length further back. Courtyard and Solwit were next. The winner carried only £4 10/- and paid a record dividend for Washdyke, but Signaller was very much better backed than on the first day.

Landraid (718 tickets), Swordstick (471) and Silver Coat (401) dominated the betting on the Southburn Handicap. Call Money dashed through the barrier before the start and his rider, C. Baker, was caught in the tapes by the neck and received a bad fall. Call Money took no part in the race. Red Dragon, Lady Kate and Pink Del all got off badly. Silver Coat and Landraid were quickest to begin and led Swordstick to the far turn. Round the top Swordstick and Silver Sail took charge and raced to the home turn clear of Landraid and Silver Coat, with Rebel Lad showing up in the next batch. Landraid was beaten soon after reaching the straight, where Swordstick drew out, with Rebel Lad in pursuit. Rebel Lad wore the leader down and beat him by a neck, Silver Coat being about two lengths away and Silver Sail two lengths further back. Pink Del was running on in fifth place. Rebel Lad, who has been gelded since he raced in the spring, is trained from his owner’s place and his condition is susceptible to further improvement. He paid over a score. C. Baker complained of internal pains on being brought to the ambulance house and was removed to hospital for observation. Wai-iti Trot. All the twenty-seven acceptors handicapped on the limit lined up in rows for the Wai-iti Trot. Royal Doulton (512 tickets) was installed a pronounced favourite from Aide de Camp-Poste Haste (209) and Chaise (191). Nearly half the field encountered trouble at the start, the actual last being Rollalong, Pukeuri and Tim Worthy. Janet Gaynor, Royal Doulton, Sylvie’s Best, Serene Bingen, Renegade and Becky Direct got away well and at the six furlongs Janet Gaynor, Royal Doulton and Sylvie’s Best were running at intervals of two lengths well in advance of Fay Rey, Serene Bingen, Undaunted and Aide de Camp. Janet Gaynor’s gear broke at the top, where Royal Doulton dashed to the front, with Fay Rey, Aide de Camp and Sylvie’s Best in pursuit. Fay Rey challenged Royal Doulton a furlong from home and won decisively by three lengths, the favourite being four lengths ahead of the consistent Aide de Camp. Sylvie’s Best was fourth, with the two-year-olds Royal Pat, Becky Direct and Donald Dhu in the next bunch. Fay Rey, who had her first race at Ashburton, carries the same colours as Discord and Sea Trail and her dividend almost reached double figures. Elloughton Handicap.

Fair Weather, Capital and Travenna, who had a later engagement in .the sprint race, were taken out of the Elloughton Handicap. Queen of Song (609 tickets), Cranford (544), Epris (518) and Trivet (372) were entrusted with the major portion of the investments. From an even line Moneyless and Argentic were first to show, all moving off promptly except Mount Vai. Turning into the back Trivet took charge from Metal Bird, Moneyless, Daring Deed and Cranford. Trivet was still in command from Metal Bird and Cranford as they raced round the top, with Epris moving up. Epris tackled Trivet commencing the last furlong and forged clear to win by nearly two lengths from Metal Bird, who beat Trivet by a length. Golden Dart, Cranford and Argentic, nearly in line, were almost a length further back. The Steeplechase.

Pahu (481 tickets) was, installed a better favourite than Trisox (356) and Monastic (328) in the Pareora Steeplechase. Royal Buck and Barrington were first away and at the stanft double the first time Royal Buck, Barrington, Red Lance, Wykemist and Monastic were bunched. Red Lance led along the back from the other four and coming to the double the second time Red Lance, Barrington and Wykemist were just in front of the rest, Trisox and Pahu having run up to the bunch. Red Lance lost ground by running down the fence at the seven furlongs and Wykemist went on from Red Lance, Monastic and Trisox. Barrington unseated his rider near the six furlongs. Red Lance was still in charge from Trisox and Monastic as they raced round the top, but he was tiring at the turn and at the last iumn the race had resolved itself into a match between Trisox and Monastic.. Trisox bored Monastic towards the inside rail in the run home and beat him by a neck after a great struggle. Red Lance was ten lengths away, with Wykemist and Royal Buck beaten off. Pahu fell through the wing when attempting to evade the last jump. A protest was lodged against the Southlander for alleged interference and the placings were reversed. The erratic course taken by Trisox was ascribed to V. Langford having an injured arm and the Winton horseman was commended by the chairman on the straightforward manner in which he had given his evidence. Temuka Hack Handicap.

In the Temuka Hack Handicap the public fancies were Ponty (608 tickets), Jack Ahoy (582), Last Refrain (408), Execution (370) and Latitude (347). Perpetuous and Royal Coat missed the jump out, but the rest all began well. At the end of a furlong Vocal was just showing from Madam Pompadour Execution and Ponty, and running round the top Vocal and Madam Pompadour were followed by Perpetuous, Execution, Ponty,. Last Refrain and Jack Ahoy. Vocal, Execution and Ponty were fighting for the lead at the top of the straight, with Jack Ahoy looking for an opening. In a neat finish Ponty won by a head from Execution, with Jack Ahoy finishing fastest a neck away. Vocal and Last Refrain practically dead-heated for fourth a length further back. Winchester Trot. The main investments on the Winchester Trot were entrusted to Peter Silk (518 tickets), Superior Rank (429), U. fcott (402) and Vanity Fair (340). U. Scott and Coral Princo broke soon after the 'start and Peter Silk tangled on leaving the straight. Sunny Jack Hazel Russell, King’s Drive and Trinidad were the early leaders from Myrna Loy, Native Son, Tenor and Superior Rank. Going along the back Sunny Jack, Hazel Russell and King’s Drive were still piloting a bunched field and rounding the top they were carrying on from Shrewdie and Vanity Fair. Vanity Fair and King’s Drive had run to the front a furlong from home and Vanity Fair secured the decision by a neck from King’s Drive, with Lottie Guy, coupled with the second horse about two lengths away. Hazel Russell, Reylena, Sky Wink and Superior Rank were next. Farewell Handicap. Emissary (978 tickets), Half Note (641), Silver Streak (562) and Capital

(465) overshadowed the rest in the Farewell Handicap. Moneyless was actually first to show, but Emissary soon dashed to the front and at the top was joined by Lochlaggan. The pair opened up a gap from the others and on reaching the straight Emissary shot away and ran in an easy winner by three lengths from Lochlaggan, who was two lengths ahead of Moneyless. Arrowrose, half a length further back, just headed Capital, Half Note and Fairweather. An inquiry was held to consider the winner’s improvement on his first day form and the big increase in investments, but the explanation that atmospheric conditions were more favourable was accepted.

Interest in the Epsom Derby has increased owing to Gordon Richards form. He rode 10 winners in the last three days, including eight successively, and also did the hat trick on May 16. Gordon Richards, who is paid a £7OOO a year retainer by his Highness the Aga Khan, and whose total income is said to be about £30,000 a year, some time ago eclipsed the 48-year-old record of Fred Archer, who rode 246 winners in one season. To do this he rode over 43 winners in 42 racing days. His only comment on his performances has been: “You can’t always ride 200 winners in a season. I have ridden over 40 horses in succession without a winner before now; you never know your luck.” . Rhodes Scholar Scratched. Rhodes Scholar has been scratched from the Epsom Derby.
