“FLYING FLEA”
First Machine In New Zealand (United Press Association.) Wellington, May 23. The first “Flying Flea” to fly in New Zealand has been granted a certificate of registration but not a certificate of airworthiness. The civil aviation branch of the Defence Department thus limits the flea to fly within three miles of a licensed aerodrome as an experimental aircraft and by a licensed pilot only. Squadron-Leader Wilkes said yesterday that the Department has no intention of granting, certificates of airworthiness to these craft pending further advice from Britain. In any case it would be difficult to arrange the thirdparty insurance policy of £5OOO required in England. The “flea” is at Auckland and it has been built by two licensed ground engineers, A. McGruer and R. D. Downey. The machine bears the lettering ZM—AAB and is the first of the ZM group.
