STEAMER HITS WALL
The Kalingo At Greymouth STRANDED FOR 15 MINUTES
(United Press Association.) Greymouth, May 24. The steamer Kalingo entering port this morning shortly after midnight was carried against the south training wall, remaining fast for 15 minutes when she was released and proceeded to her berthage, tying up at 12.30 o’clock. A fresh north-east wind combined with a considerable south westerly swell and a slight tide gave the vessel a sheer after she crossed the bar and she refused to answer the helm. While stranded she was pounded by the seas, but the masterly skill of Captain C. W. Ostenfeld saw the vessel moved clear. The vessel was drawing 6 feet at the bow and 11 feet at the stern. The damage has not yet been fully ascertained and is confined chiefly to the forward compartment. A starboard plate was split for six inches, but the leakage into the forward bilge was easily coped with.
