Fifty Years Ago To-day

(From The Southland Times). MAY 25, 1886. Football, Invercargill v. Dunedin.— Lovers of the noble sport of football witnessed a capital exposition of the game on the Park Reserve on Saturday when the Invercargill Club played their annual match with their Dunedin antagonists. The game was played in two spells of 45 minutes, and victory fell to the local club by one goal and one try to nil. Play was confined for the most part to the Dunedin quarters, the Invercargill forwards being too heavy for their opponents. Of the visitors it can be said they played a losing game with great pluck and spirit, their back play being exceptionally good. In the Invercargill team Galbraith, Braddon and Snodgrass formed an impregnable barrier and left Moore little to do. Stead and Iles played a hard game. The light dribbling was ably done by Morgan, Hawke, Collins and Brodrick, while Booth, Russell, Field, Macdonald and Cox did heavy work on the ball throughout. Mr W. Hawke was referee. Visit of Russian Cruiser.— Wellington, May 23. The Russian warship Vestnik, Captain Walkemar Lang, arrived in harbour from Launceston at noon today. The crew number 186. The Vestnik is the first Russian warship that has visited this port. Started. —Yesterday four squads of the men who have been out of employment for some time past were started on corporation work in different quarters of the town. It is satisfactory to know that the majority “acquitted themselves like men” by doing a fair day’s work. At stonebreaking several could make very fair wages if the rough material were available; besides it is well known that hand-broken metal is superior to that from machines.
