ART SALE AT THE RIALTO

William Todd and Co., Ltd., have at various times had some excellent collections of paintings for sale by auction. These have usually been collections from the brush of one painter. Something quite different and more attractive is now to be seen in the Rialto. It is part of the collection of the late Mr M. McCormick, of Christchurch, who spent a lifetime gathering valuable works of art.

A connoisseur of pictures, Mr McCormick spumed anything spurious or inartistic, and the public is now receiving the benefit of his careful selection. The pictures on display at the Rialto embrace a wide range of artists, and include oil and water colour paintings, etchings, woodcuts and aquatints. Well known painters of many countries are represented, and there is a picture to suit the most divergent tastes. Among those which will greatly attract are Bradley’s charming painting of John Knox’s house in Old Street, Edinburgh, a delightful Suffolk scene by Fletcher, who is well represented in the catalogue, two clever head studies by O’Keefe and some New Zealand scenes by Edward Frustram. Less numerous than the paintings, the etchings are none the less attractive. There is one by Wauhmann which would grace any wall, and J. R. Lorrain has a brilliant pair. The collection will be offered at auction to-morrow.
