RIVERTON BANKER FAREWELLED

MR T. R. ABERCROMBIE SERVICES APPRECIATED (From Our Correspondent.) Mr T. R. Abercrombie, who has had charge of the Riverton branch of the National Bank of New Zealand and who has been transferred to Lower Hutt, was farewelled in the Riverton Town Hall on Tuesday afternoon. There was a large attendance present, including representatives of the farming community, business people and sporting bodies and others. The Mayor (Dr. N. G. Trotter) presided, and after expressing his appreciation of the large and representative attendance, which was, he said, a sure indication of the popularity of the guest, he went on to say that Mr and Mrs Abercrombie would be greatly missed. Both had always been ready to assist any deserving cause, while their guest had taken a prominent part in the activities of the athenaeum, Progressive League and Anglican Church and was also a member of the Golf Club. He had great pleasure in handing to Mr Abercrombie a well-filled wallet, and trusted that he and his wife and family would prosper. Mr L. W. Petchell said that as one who had a long experience with bank managers he had found Mr Abercrombie one of the best ever stationed at Riverton. He congratulated him on his promotion, and wished him every success. Mr A. D. Angus said he and Mr Abercrombie had been rivals in business, but no friction of any kind had occurred to mar their friendship. Mr and Mrs Abercrombie had been good neighbours, and while he regretted their departure he had the consolation in knowing that Mr Abercrombie’s removal meant promotion. Dr. Gordon, Mr J. A. Martin and Mr C. Haywood (Thornbury), also spoke and wished Mr and Mrs Abercrombie success. Mr Abercrombie, in reply, said that words failed him to express adequately his thanks for the many kindnesses extended to him, his wife and his family during their five and a-half years’ residence in Riverton. He had always endeavoured to do his duty and it was gratifying indeed to know that his efforts had been appreciated. They had made many friends during their residence in Riverton. He thanked them for the handsome gift, and concluded by expressing the hope that the same kindness and consideration would be extended to his successor, Mr A. J. Stout, who was present that afternoon. Mr J. A. Martin welcomed Mr Stout, who, he said, had a good war record, and trusted he would feel at home among them. Mr Stout returned thanks for the cordial welcome to the town. The singing “For he’s a jolly good fellow,” brought the proceedings to an end.
