RIVERTON NOTES

SAILING RACE (From Our Correspondent.) The novice skippers’ race at Riverton was sailed over a windward and leeward course of about three and ahalf miles in a strong sailing breeze which tested the seamanship of the younger men. It was one of the best faces this season. Desert Gold, sailed by G. Patrick and Hazlemore in turn, was first. Roseen, sailed by E. Moore, finished second, but was disqualified by badly fouling the outer buoy. Ariel (F. Helm) which was close up was consequently placed second. Spray, the scratch boat, sailed by A. McFadgen, again had bad luck, having to retire through the fore and side stays carrying away. Desert Gold was the best handled boat on the day, but all the crews are improving. The competition for the Norman Beer Memorial Cup was commenced on Wednesday evening, but owing to the heavy easterly and strong flood tide the race had to be postponed. Bowling. The final for the Bailey Memorial Cup, played on the Riverton Club’s green, resulted in a win for A. T. Hogg, who defeated A. Evans by 27 points to 14. The championship singles of the club was won by P. J. Eccelton, who defeated T. King by 21 to 14. This is the fourth yeai’ in succession that Eccleton has been successful in this event. The winner was undefeated in the series. A Popular Official. Mr T. R. Abercrombie, who has been manager of the Riverton branch of the National Bank of New Zealand for the past six years, has received word of his transfer to Lower Hutt. During his residence in Riverton he has taken a prominent part in the activities of most of the sporting clubs of the town. Mrs Abercrombie, too, has been an active member- of the community and has been associated with most of the women’s associations. Hospital Fees. At a meeting of the Wallace Hospital Board a communication was read from the Wellington Board dealing with patients’ fees, and after a short discussion the board decided to make a reduction on the present rates. The charges in future at the Wallace Hospital will be 9/- a day for adults and 4/6 for children. General. Mr G. Allan, who has been a missionary in Bolivia, South America, for the past 37 years, is at present home on furlough, and is staying with his son, Mr J. J. Allan, Gummies Bush. He conducted the services in the Presbyterian Church on Sunday. Bowls. Three rinks from Otautau played the Aparima Club. Following are the results:—
