Recent criticism by Mr Justice Northcroft of a confidential report by Professor Shelley in the case of a man appearing for sentence in the Supreme Court, was briefly referred to in the business of the Canterbury College Board of Governors at a meeting today. A resolution expressing confidence in Professor Shelley was carried. The 'College Committee reported having asked the chairman (Mr C. T. Ashman) to prepare a statement about Mr Justice Northcroft's remarks and without discussion the following resolution was carried:—“The council, having seen a report which is of a confidential nature supplied by Professor Shelley to counsel in the case of an accused man in the Supreme Court, regrets that the confidential nature of the report and the circumstances in which it gained publicity prevent the council from doing more than expressing its confidence in Professor Shelley.”
