The Dinner

“We’ll mix the pudding,” Said sister Jane, “For to-morrow, Christmas Day again.” “Ah, we’ll soon do that,” We all replied. “Bring out a bowl, And fruit that’s dried. “Soak some apricots, Then bring some peas, We’ll stuff the goose, And all if you please. “We’ll finish all up To-night—Won’t we? We’ll all work hard Like a bumble bee.” We set the jelly And spilt the salt As for the goose We had to halt. Until Jane told us To make some stuffing, We peeled some onions And soon were snuffing. Some pepper was spilt In apricots; As for puddings There were, lots and lots. Instead of bananas We put in peas, As for the goose • It made us sneeze. Oh! But worst of all When thp day came, We cooks were all Crying with shame. Why? for we had made An awful mess The goose was eaten By our dog Bess. —Ruth Heath (13), Lilburn R.D., Tuatapere.
