Charlie Chaplin

VISIT TO LONDON. Charlie Chaplin is definitely going to London this month. He will be accompanied by Paulette Goddard, the leading lady of his new film, “Modem Times.” They will be present at the first night of the film on December 19 at the London Tivoli. This was announced by the GaumontBritish theatre chief, Arthur W. Jarratt, on his return to London from Hollywood. Mr Jarratt went to Hollywood specially to arrange the bookings of the picture with Mr Chaplin. The film will run at the Tivoli for not less than 20 weeks. It will not be released in the country generally until October, 1936. Mr Jarratt is the only person outside Mr Chaplin’s organization who has beei\ allowed to see the film. He says that it lasts nearly an hour and a half. Declaring that “Modern Times” was Charlie’s funniest and best picture, Mr Jarratt told a London correspondent that it was a criticism, in comedy terms, of the industrial age, and not entirely silent. He would not say if Charlie talked, but he did say that Paulette Goddard did not. The correspondent believes that Charlie sings a queer sort of song in some outlandish gibberish—that sounds issue from his mouth in rhythmic succession, but without being understandable in the matter of enunciation. You will remember the mock-vocal noises that burlesqued the early talkies during the unveiling ceremony that opened “City Lights.” Well, the correspondent thinks you will find Charlie has elaborated that motion with his own voice.
