WOMEN’S AFFAIRS

INSTITUTE MEETINGS. SOUTHERN SOUTHLAND FEDERATION. The president and executive committee extend to all members greetings for the festive season. MONTHLY MEETINGS. KENNINGTON. At the monthly meeting of the Kennington Women’s Institute, Mrs Maxwell presided and there were some very amusing responses to the roll-call, “A funny incident.” Mrs Ramsay, of Niagara, the president of the Southern Southland Federation was present and gave an informative address concerning W.I. matters, giving explicit replies to numerous questions asked by members. Mrs Ramsay was also requested to give details of her trip to the Dominion Conference, and in moving a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker, Mrs Burgess expressed the appreciation of those who were not fortunate enough to be present at this vast gathering of women. During the social half-hour an amusing competition was held, and the serving of afternoon tea by the hostesses Mesdames J. Alexander, Peters and Paterson brought an enjoyable meeting to a close. LIMEHILLS. Mrs McNaught presided at the monthly meeting at Limehills, the motto for the month being “Do not hear one and judge two.” Miss Lepper gave an interesting report on the recent Council meeting in Invercargill, and she also brought back with her the Visitors’ book, which was presented to Limehills for winning the programme competition. The roll-call was, “Suggestions for birthday party,” the majority of members expressing the desire for a social evening. Members of the staff of Messrs H. and J. Smith’s. Ltd., who were present gave a very interesting and instructive lecture-demonstration on the correct way to wash fabrics and stockings, a hearty vote of thanks being passed by Mrs Woods and carried by acclamation at the conclusion. The points competitions cake were won as follows: —(a) Miss N. Crowe 1, Miss E. Crowe 2, Mrs

Butts 3; (b) Miss N. Crowe 1, Mrs Doherty 2, Mrs Butts 3. LONGBUSH. There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting at Longbush. After the Ode had been sung and the Creed read the Roll-Call “Should husbands help in the house,” was taken, the majority of members replying in the affirmative. The president then introduced Mrs Burgess, an exponent of the art of point lace making. Some beautiful lace was exhibited, while Mrs Burgess clearly demonstrated her method to individual members, after which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. There were two competitions, Best Bloom, and best snapshot, the former being won by Miss M. Evans, with Mrs W. Christie second and Mrs N. Hughes third, and the latter- by Miss O. Brown with Mrs C. Hughes second and Mrs N. Hughes third. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs S. Brown and Mrs N. Hughes. OHAI. Mrs Martin presided at the monthly meeting at Ohai, and extended a hearty welcome to three new members. The motto was “Turn your face to the sunshine; the shadows will fall behind,” and the roll-call “Something I would like to know” brought forth some intelligent questions and many humorous ones. The competition “A Christmas gift, costing not more than 1/6” was won by Mrs McNeilage with a cushion, Mrs McKenzie being awarded second place (Dolly Varden doll) and Mrs Martin third (trinket box). The meeting decided to send gifts of Christmas Annuals to the overseas Correspondence Links. A demonstration on Solaqua work given by Mrs Martin was followed with interest, Mrs Baineaves passing a vote of thanks, to the demonstrator at the conclusion. Supper was handed round by the hostesses, Mesdames D. Nicol, McCall, J. Mills, G. Wilson and Miss P. Wilson. WOODEND. The monthly meeting of the Woodend Women’s Institute was well attended, Mrs Robertson presiding. After the usual preliminaries, a report of the recent Council meeting in Invercargill was read to attentive listeners by the delegate. The roll-call “a sixpenny parcel” resulted in a pleasing number of parcels being placed upon the table,

while the competition, Best article from 1/- worth of satin was won by Mrs Beaman (duchess set), Mrs Jordan second (baby’s dress), Mrs Brown third (nightdress case). The competition for the best bloom was well contested, Mrs Perkins and Mrs Saunders being awarded first place, Mrs Blomfield 2, and Mrs Jordan 3. The mottor for the month is “What do we live for, if not to make life less difficult .for others.” WAIKAKA. At the November meeting of the Women’s Institute, Mrs Styles presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with the family of the late Mr E. Terry. Motions of sympathy were accorded Mrs Hodgkinson in the illness of her brother and Mrs Peake in her recent illness. Sever..! letters of thanks were received. Mrs Styles was appointed delegate to the Drama meeting, Miss Green to act as deputy. A donation of half a guinea apart from members private subscriptions was voted towards the Health Stamp Campaign. The competition, a Christmas' Gift not costing more than 1/6 for which there were eighteen entries revealed some very dainty and useful articles. The prizewinners were:—Mrs MacKenzie and Miss Ida Green 1, (equal). Misses Olive Lawrenson and Alice Hodgkinson 2 (equal). Arrangements were commenced for the Summer Flower Show. Miss Green gave an interesting demonstration on Tapestry work and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. During the afternoon Miss Laurenson rendered a solo which was much appreciated. Afternoon tea was provided by the sninsters. The president extended Christmas greetings to all and the meeting closed with the National Anthem.
