GOLF LINKS

QUEEN’S PARK COURSE. UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD’S HELP. Advice that the Unemployment Board would subsidize work on the Queen’s Park golf course was contained in the following letter from the Southland Unemployment Executive Committee which was before the City Council last evening: “With further reference to your letter of November 30 regarding the proposal to alter the lay-out of the Queen’s Park golf links, I have to advise that the board has approved a subsidy of 35/- per manwcek in respect of registered and eligible married men employed on this work full-time at standard rates of wages. The subsidy is granted subject to certain conditions. I should be pleased if you would inform me as early as possible the date on which it is proposed to commence the work.” “It is most acceptable and helpful,” commented the chairman of the Reserves Committee (Mr A. W. Jones) when the letter was read. There was a brief discussion whether, in view of the foregoing offer from the Unemployment Committee, the Council would still have to find £5O towards the improvement and alterations of the course. When the reports of the previous meeting of the council were consulted it was shown that the council had agreed to spend up to £5O from the funds available for developing reserves. The letter was referred to the Reserves Committee. Apropos of the golf links the following clause appeared in the Reserve Committee’s report: “The secretary of the Queen’s Park Golf Club, in a letterdated December 3, acknowledged receipt of the council’s advice that the necessary steps were being taken to endeavour to grant the club a five years’ license from April 1, 1936, for the playing of golf at Queen’s Park. The letter stated that the remarks regarding the terms and conditions were noted and these would be a matter foxdiscussion when the draft license is submitted.” The committee’s recommendation that the letter be received was adopted.
