WORKMEN MURDERED
COMRADE’S REVENGEFUL ACT. DISCHARGE CAUSES INSANITY. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.40 p.m.) Los Angeles, Dec. 16. Charles Lyman, aged 44, apparently brooded over his discharge as a water carrier in a construction gang on a Federal relief project until it drove him insane. To-day he armed himself with a high-powered revolver and 60 rounds of ammunition and, suddenly appearing on the scene where his former comrades were working, opened fire without warning on seven men working in a ditch. Three were killed instantly and a fourth died in hospital; two more are believed to be mortally wounded and a seventh is painfully wounded in the leg. The police arrested Lyman and rushed him to gaol to prevent an angry mob from lynching him. Lyman said the men had persecuted him and the foreman would not let him work, so he decided to “clean them all out.”
