DESTITUTE COUPLE
PHILIP NEWBURY AND WIFE. FORMER CONCERT SINGERS. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 9.40 p.m.) New York, Dec. 15. Considerable newspaper space is being given to the revelation that Philip Newbury and his wife, Emily Spada, who were famous 30 years ago as concert singers, are living virtually destitute in a small flat in the tenement section of Brooklyn. Madame Spada is gravely ill, suffering from hemiplegia and painful complications from a progressive chronic malady. The couple are living on a small home relief allowance and Newbury’s occasional earnings for voice instruction. For many years illness kept both from following their professions.
