IN TARANAKI
GOVERNOR-GENERAL. MAORI WELCOME. (Per United Press Association.) Hawera, December 14. On their first official visit to South Taranaki, commencing yesterday afternoon at Patea, the Governor-General and Lady Galway were given a loyal welcome. From Patea they travelled to Hawera, where the streets were decorated with flags and festooned in coloured lights. Their Excellencies were accorded an outdoor civic reception and welcomed in song by Maoris in picturesque native costume. A visit was paid later to the annual Christmas entertainment by the Hawera Rotary Club to the boys of the Eltham Salvation Army Home. Before dinner, Lady Galway went surf-bathing at Ohawe Beach, being accompanied by the Gov-ernor-General’s aide. In the evening their Excellencies attended the annual prize-giving of the Hawera Technical High School, after which Lord Galway was entertained informally at the Hawera Club and her Excellency was the guest of honour at the Hawera Women’s Club. This morning there was an inspection of Turuturu Mokai, the great pa of ancient Maoridom. Lord Galway commended the efforts of the Hawera Borough Council in preserving the site as a tourist attraction. The Vice-Regal party left later for Eltham and Stratford, proceeding later to the Dawson Falls Hostel on Mount Egmont, where the week-end will be spent.
