SHEPHERDS NO GOOD

BADLY BEATEN IN MOCK TRIAL Mock sheepdog trials caused much amusement near’ Corwen (Wales), recently. Shepherds stood tied to the stakes and instead of sending sheepdogs on the outrun to gather the sheep and pen them they sent their assistant shepherds. These substitutes moved at the command of the shepherd’s whistle and voice and drove lively sheep between hurdles and through Maltese crosses, finally to pen them. The shepherds shouted their assistants’ surnames and gave such commands as “Lie down there, Glyn,” “Get back there,” “Steady, Ted.” The assistants took four times as long as sheepdogs took to pen three sheep.
