FINAL ADDRESS

THE LABOUR LEADER SCENES OF WILD ENTHUSIASM OPTIMISTIC TONE (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, November 26. There were scenes of wild enthusiasm at the Auckland Town Hall when a vast audience, composed mainly of Labour supporters, gathered to hear the final address of the election campaign by the Leader of the Labour Party (Mr M. J. Savage). Mr Savage was cheered and applauded at frequent points in the course of his address and at the conclusion the crowd stood and sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” The Town Hall was crowded long before eight o’clock and many who sought admission had to be turned away. However, loud speakers enabled those in the street outside to hear the address which was given without interruption except that caused by repeated applause. There were deafening cheers when Mr Savage rose to speak. “I thank you for the very inspiring welcome you have given me,” he said, and apologized for the state of his voice, which had suffered as a result of the long campaign. Mr Savage added that it was delightful to meet such an audience, and without admission by ticket. He was stopped for some moments by laughter and cheers. “Labour The Next Government.” Later Mr Savage said he liked the chances of the Labour Party better than those of any other party and it was his candid opinion that Labour was going to be the next Government. Finally Mr Savage made an appeal for a vote for Labour candidates in all electorates. , “Don’t tell me that you don t like the candidates personally,” he said. “The point is that we have got to get a majority; give us that and the things that I have been talking about will be done.” * As Mr Savage sat down amid applause many Labour candidates who had been speaking in various parts of the city and suburbs arrived and were given a rousing reception. The Rev. A. J. Greenwood moved that the meeting thank Mr Savage for his statesmanlike address and that those present pledge themselves to support Labour candidates with the conviction that the next Government for the first time in the history of New Zealand, would be entrusted tv Labour, and that Mr Savage would be its Prime Minister. The motion was earned with applause and cheers that amounted to a roar, and when this, died down one lone voice was heard in dissent. The people then rose and cheered.
