ISLAND STRIKE
COLONY OF ST. LUCIA. STATE OF EMERGENCY. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Castries (St. Lucia), Nov. 5. For the second time in a fortnight Sir Selwyn Grier, Governor of the Windward Islands, has proclaimed a state of emergency in one of his colonies. Following a stevedore strike which began on Monday and continued through Tuesday, Sir Selwyn Grier announced in the colony a state of emergency and called out the island’s volunteer force for actual military service. There has been no sign of a disturbance since more than-a hundred labourers struck on Mdnday for higher wages for unloading the collier Tasmania, but it was apparent that the Government feared an outbreak of violence such as that witnessed at Kingstown (St. Vincent) last month. The streets were patrolled for more than 24 hours by extra armed police and a small detachment of marines from H.M.S. Challenger, which has been in port since Sunday.
