A letter drawing attention to the difficulty farmers were experiencing in obtaining labour for seasonal or routine work was received from the South Canterbury Provincial Executive at the last meeting of the Waimate branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Information was requested about labour conditions in the district. The president said there seemed to be no difficulty in getting labour in the Waimate district, but he believed in Southland there was extreme difficulty. It was a grievance with farmers that they should be taxed for unemployment relief and at the same time be unable to get relief labour. One member said he had had no difficulty in obtaining labour, but higher wages were being asked for, owing perhaps to the demand for labour from Southland. It was decided to reply there was no shortage of labour in Waimate district, and that the ruling rate of wages was:—Single men, 25/to 30/- weekly and found; married couple, free cottage and no duties for wife, £2 10/- to £3 weekly.
